Since he already indicated that he had removed the pushrod, I didn't think
it was necessary to repeat that part.

That's what I've done.  Just to fill in the dumb things that some of us
forget occasionally (and I ain't sayin' who), you must first remove the
circlip which holds the piston in the cylinder.
