It 'shines' infrared heat onto whatever you point it at, which creates a
small zone of comfort without having to heat the surrounding area.  Works
pretty good, IMO, as long as you are out of the wind.  And it works much
quicker than having to heat the entire area, which can save a lot of energy
if you only work for a few hours at a time.  It also makes it much more
practical to only work for a few minutes (say after dinner on a work day).
