[TR] Harmonic Balancer for TR-4?

Tim,

Thanks, that's just the kind of information I'm after! Since the engine
rarely sees greater than 4,000 rpm, I bet it won't be a problem.

Thanks for the quick and useful answer!

Greg

Hi Greg;

Ref the harmonic balancer: I was thinking of fitting an electric fan to my
TR3A last year and getting rid of the standard one. A few people said "don't
do it; the fan is a harmonic balancer and it should not be removed". I then
got in touch with a bunch of TR racer guys in the UK that I know quite well
(I used to live there) and they told me this rumour of requiring a harmonic
balancer is a load of old rubbish; they have TR3A racing cars. All of them
have the standard fan removed and an electric one instead. None of the
engines have ever demonstrated any form of vibration or coming apart as a
result of the fan removal/lack of a harmonic balancer. Given that they race
their cars and the engines are therefore subject to immense stress,
personally I believe them.

I just thought I'd throw that into the equation. I'm obviously not going to
guarantee that it's not a problem, but the evidence seems pretty
overwhelming to me.

I hope that helps a bit, anyway.
