[TR] speedo cable key?

Changing subjects,

this past weekend I tried to hook up my speedometer cable to the speedo gauge.
However, both gauge and cable had female endings!  Seems there may have been a
male 'key' to insert in the cable before tightening it up?  Is this right??
The catalog dosent show one.

Is one needed elsewhere?
