[TR] Play in the steering column

One of my TR6s was used to SCCA club race in the eighties and nineties.
>From all that pulling on the steering wheel, it has developed about < to =
inch of in and out play (felt as movement at the steering wheel) where the
column goes into the steering box.  Not having been into the rack and pinion
I'm not sure what is happening so I don't know if it is fixable, needs to be
replaced, or if it can go quite a while before being replaced.  The car is
not on the street; I only autocross and race it.
