Off the string subject, but here's one:  If there is a string tied tight around a basketball, and a string tied tight around a sphere the size of the earth, and if you add a little over 3 feet of string to each one (the basketball string and the earth string), and if you evenly space the string around each object, Which is closer?  The distance from the string to the basket ball, ~or~ the distance from the string to the earth.
  If you follow all of that, you'll be surprised at the answer.
