I don't know if your problem has been resolved or not but removing the  plugs 
occasionally the plug body would come out & leave the thread part in  when I 
worked at the dealership. Mac tools has an extractor E 5 that is square  & 
tapers towards the end. This worked without any drilling,etc. for me on  BMW's 
with an aluminum head.
