The handle originally had a stem that ended in a rounded over end, like the rivet you described. When I took the whole thing apart I had to grind off that rivet head. To get the best results I took everything apart as much as I could. When it came time to put things back together I had a little problem with the pins that hold the vent window latches together. I think I used a small nail or maybe some welding rod, but whatever I used has fallen out.
