Whether it should be painted or not, my sparse few examples are not reliable to say.<br>

It occurs to me that leaving it unpainted makes practical sense given its contact with the rubber trunk seal, which would rub off the paint over time.<br>

Just to confuse the matter more…there is a supposedly all-original survivor for sale on eBay. In the photo of the trunk it shows the hinge screws as NOT painted…but the studs are painted.<br>

I know the claim of all original could be suspect, but thought it was worth sharing.<br>
