    I just noticed what you said..<br>

    The springs don't go behind the bakelite escutcheon but in front
    of..  between the escutcheon and the<br>
    chrome ring, they push the escutcheon against the door trim (so it
    doesn't drag, chrome against chrome<br>
    slips more easily).  <br>
    Also, I am thinking that the rubber piece goes inside the handle,
    not "around" anything.. ??<br>

          trims when rotating and keeps them pished out over the pins
          that hold the handles on. The rubbers prevent the handle
          rattling on the shaft.</div>

                        manuals in front of me... But.. The doors have
                        the felt spacers on the winder and handle. They
                        also had a rubber spacer sleeve that was used on
                        the handles that goes over the shaft and the
                        handle slips over those so stop them rattling..
                        Maybe thats what you are looking at?
