<DIV><FONT face=Helvetica>I agree with Gary. In essence the smoking tires are
the equivalent to a smoking fuse in an electrical circuit (OK the fuse blows
more than smokes, but you get the point). And as similar..., as long as the
tires are underrated to the differential strength, like the fuse is to the wire
gauge you should be alright. The light weight of the Tiger also helps to
prevent differential damage as there is less of a “start up” load.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT face=Helvetica> For what it is worth I have a much heavier than
a Tiger ‘64 Studebaker Daytona, Dana 44 with 3.07 gears, 225-60-16 tires and the
torque of a 350 Corvette engine. So far nothings broken.</FONT></DIV>

44, which has been used on a many larger cars and trucks. Although the housing
is narrowed to fit the width of the Tiger, the internals (center section,
differential, 3rd member, whatever you want to call it) are the same. </DIV>

<DIV id=yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1534599247523_8158 dir=ltr>lMO the weakest link in the
Tiger's acceleration chain is traction. This is why you definitely need a
positraction/limited slip rearend. Even with a positraction transferring power
to both the rear wheels, street tires will generally spin before you'll reach
the breaking point of the differential. The highest stresses on a drivetrain
occur when maximum traction is trying to overcome maximum static inertia. This
is why rearends, gears and u-joints almost always break at launch, where you
have peak engine torque, maximum traction and maximum inertia, which generate
the highest structural shock values to the drivetrain. If you are drag racing on
a regular basis with 500 ft-lbs torque and running wrinkle wall slicks, I would
worry about the differential unit, the rearend gears and the u-joints. That
being said, once your tires break traction, the stresses on the mechanicals are
reduced, i.e., the constant load values under acceleration are lower than the
quasi instantaneous peak shock values at launch.</DIV>

link in the Tiger's acceleration chain, but that is mostly based on wear rate.
The comments about the forward spring perches are valid, but that is mostly a
fatigue issue. Factory traction bars put undue stress on these front perches,
which is why the bars should be removed if you have them, and you should go with
a torque arm of stiffer rear springs.</DIV>
