Long ago I had purchased 2 posi units. One I ran in the Tiger in the late 60’s for chuckles with a 4.55 gear set. Learned a lot, I did. That your daily driver is not a race car, nor is your race car a daily driver, especially if its 25 miles or more to and fro. So I grabbed a posi that fit lower ring and pinion sets. I knew that there were difference way back then but the passage of time dims all thigs, lol. First, the posi that fits R&P units above I think it is, 3.73 ratios has a different location for the ring gear. For instance the flange where the ring gear is installed is roughly ½ inch closer to the ;inion centerline. That is because as gear ratios get lower (higher numerically) the pinion gears get smaller and the ring gear has to move towards the pinion to mate. A 2.88 R&P has a large diameter pinion gear set so the outward displacement of the flange was needed to assure mating with the pinion. And then there is the difference in fasteners. The 2.88 ring gear is held on with large bolts, the head uses a ¾ inch socket to remove them. Then the 4.55 ring gear posi has smaller fasteners. Simple check of trying to put a 2.88 bolt into the flange on the 4.55 posi showed that . By this time I had remembered all this stuff that I had forgotten at least 50 years ago. Red faced…. So along witht eh 4.5 R&P I have for sale (already spoken for as soon as I decide what to ask for it) I need to sell or swap my low gear ratio posi for a high gear one. Or at best swap the POSI and R&P for a high gear ratio (2.88 compatible) posi. </div><div class="yiv5194877534MsoNormal"> </div><div class="yiv5194877534MsoNormal">Next the happiness… I finished the drive shaft u-joint install yesterday. While there is simplicity in putting all these things together, they can be full on boogers when they want to be. Mine was like that. I did persevere, however, with Rick McLeod at SS and the job is now done. So I fired up the car, and after making sure that lug nuts were torqued to around 50 ft-lbs (not pound feet) and that I had air in the tire, and fuel in the tank, we drive it around the block, about ¼ mile! The left front brake was grabby and pulling to the left so I probably need to bleed then things. Dot 3, right? And even after replacing the fuel vent line and filler neck hose, and fixing a gas leak at the pump area, I STILL have the damned leaky gas smell. But the car ran and did fine after nearly 10 years of sitting patiently. So, need to bleed the brakes, and move the steering wheel around a bit to more horizontal location and then drive it some more. Had a bit of oil on the drive way but I suspect that was from rear main not being warmed up and from sitting forever. Will see how that goes today. </div><div class="yiv5194877534MsoNormal"> </div><div class="yiv5194877534MsoNormal">Like to hear from someone or anyone who would like to swap posi with me, or maybe has one to sell that is of the correct configuration (axle spline count, and ring gear compatibility).
