Plus Drive Shaft Thoughts and Findings...

The email notes regarding tires for Tigers has tweaked my interest again. I have a set of 13” LAT wheels (circa 1968) that currently have Sumitomo tires on them. But I have a set of 15” Ford wheels that I had painted to go with the car. I am seeking input for tires in the 205-215 range for the rears and 195 – 205 fronts. What are all you folk running these days? The car is very box stock and is likely to remain that way unless I get wild ( not likely at 75 approaching 76 YO, lol). Something in the Summer Performance tire or touring? No hurry but sooner is always better than later on advice…

Ok, Drive shaft. It has been a long while since I have had the car on city streets and since most of the car is back together from a past paint job, new rag top and new tonneau cover, I thought it might be good to inspect the u-joints. Especially when I saw that the gas line and brake line went inside the shaft tunnel and are very close to the front trans yoke. Well the u-joints were in sad shape, no the bearings but the rubber seals that keep the grease where it is supposed to hang out. Crumbled when merely touched. So new u-joints on the way. While the DS is off I decided to clean it up, and it was pretty crunky (new word, crummy and junky). I first cleaned off as much crusty gunk using the wire wheel on my bench grinder and then removed the front and rea u-joints. Wish I had the R&R tools, lol. Then I thoroughly cleaned all parts. Down to bare metal. Uses carb cleaner, the in bucket kind, to clean the u-joint locations and light sanding to remove any surface rust. Came out nice. While I was looking I found a couple of factory marks of some kinds. One was a small capital “B” near the rear DS yoke and close by was a number “V6420” These two stampings are not located very near to each other. Just curious as to what they might be. “V” number is probably a supplier part number and the “B” is ? Both are very small in size, less than 1/8 inch tall. I first painted the DS with a high temp engine paint I had on the shelf, black, and it was too much like a primer covering. So I used a gloss black to cover that. So far it looks very nice! Rick is sending me the new U-joints, here hopefully tomorrow or Thursday. Anxious to get back on the road, lol…

So, tire thoughts and recommendations and the DS is just for thought and comment or whatever as not seeking anything else for it.

‘preciate it…

mayf

_________________________
drmayf
Worlds Fastest Sunbeam, period.
204.913 mph flying mile average speed
210.779 mph exit (not top) speed

This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the Recipient.
