My car Vin’s last 4 digits are 1136 so it is not the newest nor oldest car in the garage. And I have owned this car since 1967, as second owner. Way back when, just after I was married, the SU AUF 301 fuel pump died. I remember the new wife and I happily driving up high way 101 and having to rap the fuel pump occasionally with a tiny ball peen hammer to keep it functioning. I did no replace it with a new AUF 301. Instead I installed one of the American made pumps that pulse almost continuously. But, I digress a bit. I started the smell repair operation by removing the trunk panels that hide the tanks and the cross over pipe. I have purchased the hose connectors, 4 each, for the cross over and have a new filler neck hose, fuel sender gasket, and Tygon vent hose connecting the 2 tanks ventilation together. Fuel and lube compatible Tygon is spendy, lol, about $2.50 per foot. But should outlast the car, lol. Sold on ebay occasionally. My next operation was to open the fuel pump access door, disconnect the fuel pump feed line and drain the remaining fuel from the tanks. I even moved the car to the shop concrete pad to make sure that if some odd even happened and the whole mess caught on fire for some reason, it would not burn the shop down, lol. I even removed the battery to assure the car was electrically dead, i.e. no sparks. I looked upon my install of nearly 42 or so years ago and I noticed something; I had put a piece of a split heater hose around the connections to keep stuff from rattling, and when I touched that, my finger became wet with, wait, fuel! So it appears that I have serendipitously found the source of the smell. I did the touch test and mirror looks and found no other weepy leaks anywhere. When the stuff I had installed to prevent noise was removed, the leak was coming from the tank to pump feed line fitting where I had adapted the British ferrule to American fitting. Only there and not the outlet side, go figure. Dry on that end. So, if I am any judge of my past repair work, I am guessing that there is a mismatch between the Brit side and ‘mercan side. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>And while I am interested in maintaining as much OEM stuff as possible, I am not interested in obtaining a new version of the SU fuel pump. What I need is a source for a fitting that will use the Brit fitting on one end and American fitting , ie ¼ inch pipe, on the other. I know there must be at least among us who has done something similar and knows where I might find such a beast. I need two of them. Brit pipe fittings, as we have seen from the temp sensor, have straight threads and a fiber washer to seal fluids, at least in that era of car manufacturing. In the process of repairing this to be modern and safe, I am also adding a canister fuel filter, a Summit Racing one which has ¼ inch pipe threads before the pump to save the pump from any possible debris damage, although the fuel I drained looks clear and useful. And I will also add a larger inline filter before the carb to keep crap out of it as well, should such be in the line. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>I am also contemplating changing all the fuel line connector hoses; those short pieces that are along the line I guess to aid in assembling the total fuel system. That’s pretty straight forward. Except, how many of those are there? I see that Earl’s has a new hose that does not let vapors though and while spendy, a foot of it to cut into short pieces won’t break the bank. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>So, to summarize, I need help on three pieces of information:<o:p></o:p></p><ol style='margin-top:0in' start=1 type=1><li class=MsoListParagraph style='margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo2'>Where to get fittings that will adapt the British side of the fuel pump install to American pipe threads, just a source or suggested places to look,<o:p></o:p></li><li class=MsoListParagraph style='margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo2'>how many of the short fuel line connector hoses in the under car fuel line run are there are so I know how much to order from Earl’s (A Holley Company now). <o:p></o:p></li><li class=MsoListParagraph style='margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo2'>On the cross over pipe between tanks, is the outlet pipe to fuel pump ¼ inch pipe and if so, is it a straight thread Brit, or tapered American pipe thread.<o:p></o:p></li></ol><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>And a final comment relating to the cars design. Who in their right minds would run fuel and brake lines inside the tunnel next to potentially whipping drive shaft pieces in event of front u-joint failure!
