<div>You are correct. The hex drive shaft for the oil pump is not lining up with
the distributor. There are no timing issues with the oil pump so just rotate the
hex shaft as needed (it is a guessing game – <em>a little this way, a little
that way</em>). Whatever you can get down on the shaft will do. Just be
careful not to lift the shaft (which has been known to happen if you use a
socket on a long extension). Otherwise you will then have to get the shaft back
into the oil pump.</div>

cleaned everything up, and went to put it back in. Problem. It will
only go all the way down with the gear one tooth off from where it came
out. If I start putting it in with the rotor pointing where it stopped as
I pulled it out, the gear engages and it looks like it will rotate into the
right position, but it won't go down all the way. If I start with it one
tooth ccw, it goes in just fine, but the rotor is not in the original
position. I took a "before" picture before I pulled it out, so I know
where the rotor was pointing.</div>
