<DIV>Mine was almost black when I started. I began in the dishpan using a
kitchen scrub brush that had normal bristles around the edges and a center
section with brass bristles. Cleaned it up to like new and just a
touch rough. Let it dry completely for a few days (not in the sun)
and then began sanding using finer grits each time. </DIV>
<DIV>For a finish coat I visited a marine supply store and asked what they
used on boat decks. I figured if it held up there it would hold up on the
steering wheel. I used a clear poly that they recommended. I think about 4
coats with very fine steel wool and tack cloth between coats. After about
15 years, holding up great.</DIV>
