<p>I would also consider changing the wiring harness between the alternator and the voltage regulator/ battery, if you go to a bigger alternator, or at least make sure the "battery" wire is the same gauge as a new one, and in good shape. That extra amperage
charging the battery flowing through a to small wire will generate heat, possibly melting the wire.</p>

<div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1486025819654_12463" dir="ltr">The 55 amp will not do more that recharge your battery faster, give you the ability to add accessories if you want, like AC, driving lights, old style as newer ones use LED I would think. My guess is
you have a bad diode or the internal regulator is bad. I would have the alternator you own rebuilt. BUT that is me. If you don't care about the cost of new vs. rebuilt, buy a new one. Just my 2 cents.</div>
