In-Reply-To: References: <7385B51F-27B6-4D24-8DA5-8915DD579942@sbcglobal.net> Message-ID: <755916246.2250956.1785963085634@mail.yahoo.com> I'd like to investigate whether intermittent contact with the rubber snubbers is adding firmness to the feel of my MkI's front suspension. Unfortunately guessing at the condition of the road springs by comparing tire clearances, ride heights, etc, is usually inconclusive because of car to car variables like wheel and tire sizes. So before disassembling anything I'd like to first do a quick "look see". To that end, can anyone share the intended clearance between the top of the stock rubber snubbers and their corresponding stop-pads on the cross-member for a (mostly) stock Tiger with known good springs? A related question is how much front wheel travel the Tiger design was intended to provide. I haven't see either of these dimensions in the Workshop Manual and either one might help inform whether a more invasive investigation is justified. My stock Tiger is lowered with ground down rubber spring pads and stock sagged springs, don't think it ever bottoms. Might be due to the shock setting. I put the disc brake conversion on my Alpine. The caliper is positioned such that if the rear compresses enough, the lip of the frame above the rear end will hit the parking brake spring part of the caliper before any stop is hit. I don?t know that I have ever hit such a bump that has caused anywhere near that kind of compression. But it still makes me nervous. I?ve been debating adding a bigger stop inside the shock itself (the are Konis, which I think do have such stops), or rotating the caliper to a different position. The problem with the different position is that the parking brake rod and cable will no longer work. Just a thought to add to the collective knowledge. > On Aug 5, 2026, at 7:33?PM, Gary Winblad wrote: > > Terry, > I bet Tom Hall could give you those answers. > My stock Tiger is lowered with ground down rubber spring pads and stock sagged springs, don't think it ever bottoms. My old Tiger had Dale's kit with the old Fiat 124 calipers. No problem with clearance.. but now unobtanium (and for Tiger). Terry, My clearance from the rubber stopper to the slightly concave metal stop is just about 22.2mm (or the outside of a Craftsman 5/8in (1/2inch) chrome socket.. what I found I could stuff in there to measure the clearance. Like I said, my Tiger is stock old MK1 with ground down rubber spring buffer pads (by Paul Reisentz). So it sits a little low... like I like it. Running old Spax shocks from SS, set like Rick told me, I think about 1/2 way (soft to firm)., never noticed it bottoming. The shop manual is your friend. See the alignment section, page 5 for the position to put the gap gauge you can make (page 24). That is for factory stock. My old original stock sagged springs are probably no where near correct. Gary WInblad On Mon, Aug 10, 2026 at 10:42?AM Jay wrote: > I?ll add a twist on this.
