If the car just died it's hard to put the blame on the battery.  If you
managed to start the car, the battery can't be in very bad shape.  If you
were to completely disconnect the battery while the car is running, it
would continue to run on the generator.  If you're sure it's an
electrical problem I would start by checking out the ignition system -
points, coil, condenser, ballast resistor.
