Seems as though my original post disappeared into lala land!  The post was
about what I did to cure the issue concerning the early headlight bezels
popping off at the most inappropriate time - like mine did some years ago!
Some time ago, there was a discussion  about drilling a hole in an original
Tiger part- a big No No in my opinion!  So here is what I did.  I took a
length of fishing line (very strong 65 lb. test) and fed it through the
small loop (roll) in the headlight bezel (the part that snaps onto the part
that is fastened to the fender).   I then tied a knot and left several
inches of line (6-8inches each side should be enough).  It wouldn't hurt to
put a drop of Super glue on the knot.  Now carefully, with the bezel in
place with a small gap at the bottom, tie the two ends around the piece that
is attached to the fender. It's tight - the more nimble your fingers are the
better.  The distance is about an inch or so - the closer the better.  Then
tie a good knot and then some Super Glue to keep the knot from unraveling
(actually I used Bondic). Now if the Bezel pops out it can't come all the
way off.   A word about the fishing line - it's actually braided and
extremely strong.   I bought it at Walmart some time ago.  I've found many
uses for it.  I'm enclosing a picture of the fish line package.  Also a
picture of the installed line.  It was very hard to get a close enough
picture - o it's kind  of upside down.

from Sunbeam Specialties; one is vinyl, one is Stayfast vinyl and the third
is cloth.  I can't find any explanation about the differences between the
two vinyl options.

Is Stayfast worth the extra money?

The cloth option is just a little more money than the Stayfast option.
Would it be worth it to go with the cloth?

Hello,
I faced the same situation as you did earlier this year. I went with the cloth top and I don?t regret it at all; it?s in a completely different league than the vinyl tops which we?ve all had since the cars were new.
A local guy to me  in Massachusetts installEd the top and I was stunned with the job that he did and the luxurious appearance,fit and finish that the cloth top had. You don?t do this often, you might as well go all the way. Consider that this will be the last time that a top is installed on your car.

While I have never changed the top on my car, and only nominally know one is in there, wasn?t it discussed here once that cloth tops are just bulky enough that they will not fit under the decorative ?doors? on Mk1 cars, and only fit Mk1-1/2 & Mk2? That said, I?ve had cloth tops on other cars and I really like the results.

>From my experience spend the extra go with the cloth top only. I have had a Robbins top on my car for about 15 years now and it still fits and looks as new. The vinyl tops always seem to have a crease on the sides and the fit will depend a lot on the temperature.

I'm using a gasket that came with my Edelbrock carb but it looks like they
don't sell that part by itself.  This Fel-Pro gasket should work.

Mine did not have that, but I'm the third owner, and #1 or #2 had stripped
the air cleaner and painted it red.  I can't recall hearing anything about
extra gaskets, though it probably wouldn't be a bad idea...

You are correct they are stock parts.

The element was just a paper element with no seals to the air cleaner like todays air filters are manufactured.

 

You should post a picture of those gaskets.  I?m not sure I have ever seen the original gaskets.   I know my air cleaner had none.

I have seen a drawing somewhere, probably 
in the shop manual.  Since I got my Tiger in 
1971, I have never seen a filter without 
molded on gaskets.

I'm getting ready to install a new top and I'm going through all of the
instructions I can find and they all refer to the longer metal strip that
holds the back of the vinyl and two side strips that do NOT hold the
vinyl.  I grabbed this shot from a video that shows the side piece I'm
talking about.

I can't find these side pieces to save my life and I don't remember ever
seeing them.  I've gone through all of my boxes and can't find them.

So,  does anybody have a pair they would like to sell?  Or can anybody give
me a close up photo of one and the dimensions so I can fabricate something
the will work?

All it does is hold that rubber piece down.  So any flat strip will work.  The lip is probably there to keep the curve shape.  You can probably accomplish that with adding extra screws or using a stiff piece of metal that once bent, will generally hold its shape.  I don?t think the ultimate length is critical.

But, of course, hopefully you?ll find a pair.

I don?t know if the drawing for this part is available.

I measured mine at 13? long.  Looks like it is a couple inches away from the center piece.

I?ll take a better look in the daylight.

 

Not sure there are needed other than to hold the rubber piece in place.

I might be able to get a picture but difficult with the hard top on.

Gary, Great suggestion. That small strip is the shelf for the metal side panels that cover the soft top when folded up and not in use.  If the car is not a mark 1 and has the padded top cover for the a Mk1A)(?) or ii then it may never have had those?

Hi Mayf,
I think you are correct, it was a shelf for the side panels, but I think later cars had them too.
But I may be wrong...
I was just thinking of what I might do.. to remove the soft top, the long strip is required but the
short ones are not so I would just leave them on...  and forget it, LOL.

I am pretty sure the Reisentz estate has those, I am not sure when I will go there but will
look.

My Mk 1A, assembled probably in the late summer of '66, has those strips,
but without the holes.  I never put them on, just gluing the rubber strip
in place.

I took some pictures ? hope they help.

 

Part is 13? long                  1? wide                4 screws hold it to the body

The position of the part is different side to side ? pass side is an 1? away from the soft top hinge ? driver?s side ??.

You will have check where the hole are on your body.
