Many of you may have met Charlie Ockels and his Tiger in the past.? He's 
from the San Francisco Bay Area but has attended many Tigers United and 
east coast United events.? Unfortunately, Charlie suffered a 
debilitating stroke a year ago last March and has been incapacitated 
since then.? His Tiger had been in storage at his "ranch" near 
Watsonville, CA.? Sometime in the last year, the Tiger disappeared from 
it's garage storage and is now missing.

Charlie's Tiger is modified and has a very distinctive appearance, a

it seems like there is a very limited market for "stolen" tigers... the TAC
system and the personalisaed nature of the car would make it easy to
identify...

If it has been stolen for resale.. surely it would have to leave the
country?
Should notify all the intl clubs.. especially LHD markets.

The original speedometer cable broke in my MKII. Trying to put in a replacement cable from a MKI reveals that there is a spacer/shim/adapter left in the Toploader tail shaft. Does anyone have experience removing said spacer? Had a pic of the item but MicroSD seems to be empty now. Here is a pic of the orig cable and the replacement. Looking for a suggestion on removing the spacer or acquiring a replacement MKII speedo cable. Thank you.

	 Although I am not sure what a &quot;linch round&quot; fitting is, there is a flat steel piece that could be described as a Large Hole, that fits around the speedo cable housing, and a smaller hole that is used to clamp this cable holder to the transmission. It's proper position is ON the cable, such that the cable housing is sandwiched between this clamp and the transmission. The other hole is used to bolt it to the threaded hole in the transmission. This can be reached through an access panel on the transmission cover, under the floor mats. It is a little tricky putting it on, because of limited space for things like fingers and wrenches. Since your clamp is apparently already off your cable, there is a neat trick you can use that will make life simpler for you. That clamp can be cut through the center of the large hole, leaving a &quot;C&quot; shaped section, with a tail having the bolt hole. This can more easily be put on the assembled cable and tightened down. It might look something like this: o( (connect the edges) An even neater trick, which requires a little pre-thought, is to cut that section out of the clamp at an angle. The clamp is positioned on the transmission, with the slotted hole totally above the cable entry, and held lightly in place by the holding screw. This can be done either when the tranny is outside the car, or in place. The cable is firmly inserted and seated, then the holding screw is loosened, allowing the clamp to fall down into the groove in the cable. The holding screw is tightened, and your done. To remove the cable, loosen the screw, wiggle the cable then flip the cut end up and tighten the holder. Cable comes out, and the holder is ready for re-insertion. Neat, Huh? Only trick is to position the holder on the tranny, with the cable out, and move it up till a diameter cut will clear the cable entry. Mark the particular half-cut you need to make, at this angle, then remove it and cut it at the proper angle. Hope this helps. Apparently someone replace yours with the clamp off the cable.<br>

Never saw a speedo cable break there.

 

See picture

This section of the cable has an O ring and the 17 teeth drive gear clipped.

There should be a .235? OD hole in this piece, you need to check to be sure.

 

You may need to get some lube on the O ring so it will slid out easier.

You should be able to screw a sheet metal screw or bolt into that .235? hole so it can be pulled out.

You may need to lower the transmission a little to get at that speedo part better.

They call it a 1964 Series 3.  However, it has a Series 1 or 2 wind shield and doors.  They can be swapped.  So maybe in addition to the engine and frame, they swapped the windshield and doors too.  But otherwise it?s not a 1964 or a Series 3.

Personally, I don?t like when the rear fins get pipped up like that.  I prefer how the real racers made the cars more horizontal on top.  Real racers being Mills, Moss, McLaren and Brabham.  Now those are great looking cars (and with non-peaked rims too).

I adjusted that last picture because it was taken on an angle.  Now the car is horizontal to the road.  Just to emphasize how they lowered the rear for these race cars.

All those racers are lowered in the rear.  

And the LS3 is raised.

Stock is in the middle, probably closer to the racers.

The picture also reminds me of myself in 1979.  I was driving my Alpine.  I ran out of gas.  So I was at the side of the road, after putting in gas, and using the little hand lever on the Alpine fuel pump, to get the gas into the engine (yes, in case you were not familiar with that for Alpines, there is such a lever).  Someone drove by and yelled ?You should have had a V8.? 

Now, I did think that was funny.  But part of the joke is that HAD I owned a Tiger, I would have merely run out of gas that much sooner.

Anyone here an airline pilot who owned a Tiger and then a Ferrari, and lived in Woodland Hills in the 1980s?  Or anyone know who that might have been?

I was just recalling that I purchased a Dynoplastic hardtop from you/him then.  At the time, he had sold his Tiger and bought a Ferrari, and still had the hardtop.  I bought it for a whopping $75.

It?s funny, it didn't have the rear quarter windows. The front and rear clips were basically L brackets with J bolts in them. Years later, when I had money and restored my Alpine, I bought a decent factory steel hardtop and restored it to match perfectly, all new rubber, all new windows and all correct brackets. I finally ditched that silly $75 top.

Then I came to realize how great that Dynoplastic one was. Glass rear window and sooooo light. Easy to put on and off by myself. Easy to hang up on the wall. Quick to put on and off if the need arose.

And now instead I have a supremely heavy hardtop with plastic rear window, that I can still put on and off myself - but with quite a heft to get it up and off. In fact, I think I've done it only once or twice since restoring it. Of course that's mostly because I greatly prefer top down driving and don't drive it in the rain.  

Sometimes they say the simpler life is the better life.  So maybe the simpler hardtop is the better hardtop.

That was a great looking top. I believe I had the same top on my first Tiger but it was labeled Coachman. Bought it in the early 70?s. Dare I say, I actually liked the look of it slightly more than the factory hardtop! I don?t know about you airline pilot, but I bought my Tiger in Sun Valley in 1970.

OK, I had to share this absurdity.  How much would you spend to take a 4 cylinder English roadster and stuff a V8 into it?  I would imagine doing it to an Alpine and spending a bunch of money to make it like a Tiger might make some sense.  But what about a 4 seater Austin Healey that never came with a V8 option?  How about $850,000???  Yes, you read that right.  They even have the list of invoices paid.  At some point don't you say "wait, stop, dear god, how much is this going to cost me?"  And then after ALL THAT MONEY wouldn't you think he would have had a reason to do such as driving it more than 300 miles before putting it for sale?

It just boggles my mind. For $850,000, they could buy all of these together: the best MkI and the best MkII on the planet, a Tiger race car AND still have money left over to buy a house or two, depending where you are in the country. And heck, maybe instead of the house, a real Cobra too.  I just can't imagine loving the idea of a V8 AH so much that you have to do this (and then immediately sell it and never enjoy the result).

The old school bonnet straps clash with the modern valve covers/air 
cleaner in a disassociated way.? The 327 engine was early 60's and 5 
years after the original build. It may be close to the time period but 
one would think the aluminum LS engines are a better fit weight and 
power wise. The dual carbs are surely over kill. Is that one of those 
gen-alt-nators? Or is it just a generator? Again it clashes with the 
modern engine coverings.

The write up implies the period correct engine compartment??? /"The 
engine compartment is a visual delight of performance blended 
with*correct factory finishes* and excellent polished features. The 
engine compartment and firewall have been equally finished to a very 
high level, *correctly painted, and in keeping with the exterior 
presentation.*"/What? The engine dressings need to be more in keeping 
with the period of the car and a $700,000 price drop would seem 
appropriate. I'd rather have my "beater" Tiger than having to explain 
why I bought this - especially at the asking price. I think the selling 
agent web link say it all "Fantasy Junction."

When I was in high school in the early 70's, there was a guy in town who stuffed a 426 hemi in an Austin Healy. It didn't have a hood, the heads were higher than the fenders and I don't think he could see anything in front of him, but it sure drew attention. Sorry, off topic, but this thread brought back that memory.

Roasting hot day, 4 Tigers showed up, but also a number of Tiger owners without their cars or driving alternative vehicles. Good to see Stu Brennan David Kellogg David Twombley, and Jeff Randall myself Jim Armstrong and two other owners of two red cars one Tiger 2 and a Mark one.
Memories getting catchy, so I didn?t remember their names. Nice cars though. A good time was had by all

Hello

I am building a stock 260 for my very early Tiger. See photo of block. I am installing a new camshaft and I ordered one from COMP Cams back in March. I am not sure what is going on over at COMP Cams but my item is still on back order and they are now saying late July. Every time I have called it is always the same story?next month.

Enough whining?does any body have a recommendation for another manufacturer. I have heard good things about Cower and bad things about Crane. 

COMP offered a cam and lifter kit which includes everything you need. I would prefer finding something similar.

Hi James,

When I rebuilt my 260 about 4 years ago the only cam I could find was COMP
Cams 31-215-2.  It didn't have the exact same specs as the original Ford
part, but it was close enough.  But, like you said, nobody seems to have
them in stock.

i recently built a stock 302 for a friend.  he was on a budget.  i used
this summit cam (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-1799) which turned
out to be really nice.  smooth idle and progressive power up to about
5500.  apart from ported heads and raised 10:1 compression it was pretty
much stock but the car made well over double the HP on the rolling road
compared to before the rebuild.

i was surprised by that cam.
