In 1966 I was 17 and I was running used tires and retreads (remember those) Now, I drove every car I owned like I stole it in those days. I remember bias ply tires and the change to radials; which was an upgrade! Do I remember all the nuances of that upgrade? Sadly, no. But one thing I do know is that tire technology is soooo much different than back in the day. My memories of that time was always fixing flats. :-) Thanks for the memories! The car was slick in every scenario but one.? On the street it was best to steer with the accelerator pedal but I was embarrassed? more than once not doing so.? Busy intersection making a normal left or right hand turn on 4 lane roads after waiting on light, the rear end would just swing around and I would be pointing the wrong way in the middle of the highway.? Cars would start honking, hands waving, no middle fingers, basically just laughing.? I would throw up my hands in surrender and then in a swirl of smoke and rubber head off down the road. The only time that these bias ply tires seemed to be any benefit was when drag racing on the beach.? Uncap the CAT 3" cutouts on their headers, let a bunch of air out of the tires, wave money and take on all comers before the bands started on the beach and the serious drinking began.? Bias ply tires seemed to work then. Now 15" LAT 70 wheels with good radial rubber, it is a different car to drive and much more enjoyable without the 180 degree rear end swinging around. Different times, different tires, some things do get better with age. I know it has the 5/8? master and the pedal is by far the stiffest clutch I?ve ever used. I was thinking about putting a 1/2? master on. Tilton does make one. But I don?t know if it will fight right yet. Anyone have any thoughts? Maybe anyone remember what my dad might have selected inside the clutch. I think Dan Walters worked on it and I?ve emailed him directly. Most said that the biggest concern is if I?ll get clutch disengagement. Dan commented that the larger slave is less of a change than dropping to 1/2 from 5/8. But swapping the master is much easier. And I?m not even 1/2 way pressed and I get clutch disengagement. So right now I?m probably going to try that. It?s a shame I don?t know what clutch dad had. I?ll see if I can see underneath to see what clutch slave in on there. However I still have advice. Take a look for the return spring in the clutch activation fork. I lost two throughout bearings before I realized that it was missing. The return spring was on my first Tiger B382002027. But not on my 2nd Tiger B383000471. I can not find it in any of the parts manuals but once installed my throughout bearing problems disappeared. On both the Tigers mentioned above there is a hole in the driver side frame extension that worked great for the forward connection point and the fork has a hole for the after end connection. As a TACH inspector I have looked for these springs for the last 15 or so years or so. They are not on all cars. Although not in my hands now, I know the spring is still installed and protecting the through the bearing in my last Tiger. The alpine ans tiger headlight rims and grill surround are the same and same fixings. The change between screw fixing and clip fixing headlight rims was the same time in alpine and tiger production. They were not model specific parts. The sheet metal radiator support panel has detail changes for tigers if that is what you are asking? But I can add this. My dad got one, and it?s now on the car. I love it and would not swap back on the stock one. If I recall correctly, it is not fiberglass, but possibly a carbon fiber. However, the arc of the bonnet does not exactly match the arc of the fender line. The bonnet edge arcs a little higher than the body. As I said, it?s not so bad that I would go back to stock. These days most badges are held on by double back foam tape. I have used foam tape to attach badges on newer cars, works well. You need to decide your best option - modify so the clips work or use foam tape. I believe RTV is too messy and not reliable enough. You need to completely cover the surfaces, that way RTV creates a vacuum on the badge after hold the badge firmly in place until the silicone volcanizes. The problem I see with this is vibration will loosen the silicon eventually and we have plenty of vibrations. The foam tape has some compliance to vibration. You just need to get both surfaces clean for the tape to stick well. As with all the badges and emblems on the Sunbeam, you need to check them. I nearly lost the 2 rear fender badges because the stud started to give way. Had to solder the studs back in place and I added a little foam tape to help keep them on the fender. That?s where I found my first Tiger, a Midnight Blue Mk1. I recall reading about MkII?s but seeing just one. I?ve come to appreciate MkII styling But back in the day the absence of side ?stripe? left me skeptical. In it, he states "While about 80% of the original Tiger sales were located on the west coast, ownership opportunities now exist nationwide." While I knew the majority of Tigers were delivered to California, I had never heard it quantified. Our Tiger research has always lacked data on delivery ports and retail outlet distribution. In the list of dealers for Massachusetts, there is also a "Boston Warehouse" mentioned. The address is on a pier at the waterfront, what today is the Black Falcon cruise terminal. So it appears that Boston was also a POE for Rootes products. Odd, since I don't see any other mention of a warehouse in other likely ports, NY, Baltimore, Savannah, Long Beach, San Francisco, etc. Also odd, there are three pages of dealer listings for California, but almost 5 pages of dealer listings for the NY/NJ area. Yet according to the cited statistic, most of the Tigers went west. Was there ever a list of dealers? I know in 1966-1967 my father bought a brand new Sunbeam Alpine GT. Car came with a hardtop but there was no soft top. The dealer had their own Alpine they used for racing and I can remember trying to talk my dad into buying a Sunbeam Tiger which the dealer had in stock. The question was asked earlier in the thread by, I believe, Dan Eiland, if there had ever been a list of Rootes dealers available. I happen to have in my possession just such an animal; it is the ?United States Dealer List? for ?Sunbeam?A Rootes Product.? It is a list of all the U.S.-based Rootes dealers in 1965, the year that the list was printed. It says on the back cover, ?For Further Information, Contact British American Imports, Inc., 24-16 Bridge Plaza South, Long Island City, New York, 11101.? If I remember correctly (and this was at least 35 years ago), an old friend of mine at the time (as well as a Tiger owner) gave me this publication. He had several of them due to the fact that his brother-in-law was the Sunbeam dealer in the Oklahoma City, OK, area (Vern Collins of Vern Collins Motor Co., U.S. 66 at North Redmond, Bethany, OK) and my friend had purchased his Tiger from him. I have taken a look at this publication and have tried to find some of the dealerships that the participants in this thread have mentioned, but have only been able to find one (Nick Graffeo Motors, 1809 3rd Ave., Birmingham, AL). Since this list was published/printed sometime in 1965, this leads me to believe that the dealer network for Rootes cars in the U.S. may have been a bit transitory in nature. Since Rootes dealers would have still been around for several years after this brochure was printed, it is reasonable to assume that there were more dealers added and/or some dealers dropped out of the network. I know that some cars I've owned you could trace which dealer originally sold the car through the original paperwork. Without the original paperwork I'm not sure how you would know. The dealer was close to the military bases which was probably where most of their buyers were from. I don't recall the name of the dealership, but I remember they were on Dyer Street in El Paso, Texas. Does anyone know from where this 80% figure was obtained? Does anyone have additional or contradictory information/documentation on ports of entry and retail distribution? Thanks in advance. Interestingly, the dealer for my car is not on the list. My owner's manual has everything methodically typed into it, and lists the selling dealer as Little Simca Center in Longview, TX. I also have a shipping invoice that lists the port of entry as Houston, TX, and the ship as the S. S. Silver Sea. That document is the one that was recently emailed with the CAT newsletter. I googled "Little Simca Center", but have only found a couple of newpaper archives with ads. --Bob Burruss 382000782 ________________________________ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2022 13:20:41 -0700 From: To: "'Will Seay'" , "'Stu'" Cc: "'Tiger List List'" Subject: Re: [Tigers] Original Tiger Port of Entry and Sales Information Message-ID: <000001d8b7f6$fc851e90$f58f5bb0$@verizon.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Don?t know if this will attach to the list, but here?s the dealer list for 1966.
