[Tigers] Tiger MkI clocks

Ron:

I just walked back out to the shop and took a closer look at the clock face on my Mk1A. As it turns out, the model # is printed on the top of the face over the “12”. It reads “CE 3130/00”. Even though it looks just like yours, the model # is different.

A quick Google search on that model # has this clock coming up as a “positive earth” clock. Consequently, I think I’ve answered my own question. It would appear that the clock has been converted to negative ground at some point and put into my car. It still has its original movement in it and has worked perfectly for years, at least up until about two months ago when it abruptly stopped working. I guess I need to remove it and see if I can find the fault.

Thanks, Ron, for the prompt on where to look for the number.

Thanks,

Andy

I’m not up on the clock specifics but you probably need to look close past the edge top and bottom to see if a number is hiding under the chrome.

Hey, Ron, et al:

With all this original clock talk, I’m now starting to wonder what clock I have in my Mk1A. Out of curiosity, I stepped out to my shop and looked at which clock I have. Mine looks exactly like yours, and it also says “Made in U.K.” at the bottom of the face but it has no model # (such as CE 3131/01, etc.). Do you have any idea what I might have here? BTW… I’m not the original owner of my car so I can’t say with any certainty that this particular clock is original to the car.

Just curious,

Andy Walker

Jim

I see where the 1229322 is listed as Electric Clock Kit; whereas the other Rootes Clock numbers are listed as Electric Clock. A small difference but maybe an important difference.

I don’t know if the wording makes a difference or if maybe the 1229322 part # may have a Chrysler Pentagon on the packaging.

Small differences should not be ruled out.

My 2 cents

I have never seen a 3030/00. I have owned all the 2194's listed for the Alpine. 1Years ago I found a new in box 3131/00 and have purchased a couple of 3131/01. SAOCA has a listing of Smith's clocks and list 3030/00 also. What's strange to me is the Rootes parts books I have 6601131 2nd issue (MKI) and 6601334 (MKI & MKII) only list one part # for Tiger clocks 1229322 which isnt listed on the SAOCA site. The two Rootes special accessories brochures I have, only list the same Rootes part # 1229322.

I hope you are all well and safe.

I'm putting together an article for CAT Tiger Tales and am having difficulty sorting out the correct MkI model Smiths clock. The BON lists a 3030/00 as the appropriate model and what research I've located supports this. Trouble is I can't seem to find a photo of sufficient detail where I can read the model number. I'd greatly appreciate pictures of the 3030/00 models where the model number is visible.

In addition, the only photo I did find with all the assigned attributes (sideways 3 & 9, red hands, adjustments at 4 & 8, Smiths logo below the clock center) is on a Smiths model CE3131/00 (see attached). So any group knowledge with references would be much appreciated

I try to make these articles as accurate as the data allows.

There is enough erroneous data out there already.

Cheers,

Brian
