But I thought it interesting that I learned that today's cheapest tires have more grip than the racing tires of the 60s. This is good and bad. Good to have all that traction. Good because it kind of makes arguing for the best tire for the car a little funny where the cheapest one will give better performance than when the cars were new. But, bad because the 60s suspensions were not designed for such grip, putting more forces into the suspension. My Tiger didn?t have a top or a frame for that matter when I got it. The frame that I have is for a MKI with the tension cables that I bought on eBay a while back. I?m still on the fence about going original or with an upgraded material such as the canvass type. Mine is ?personalized? so, not a concours restoration. I?ll also check with Rick at SS. Robbins was my first choice before I read about the issues pointed out regarding the tonneau cover. I had thought of converting the cable system to a velcro type. Lot?s to think about. After sending out this question about the dipper I went back out and messed around with the carpet some more and found a way to make it work by putting it on top of the bracket. I just need to put some heat on the back of the carpet to help mold it some. Thanks, Joe Brown ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Joe Brown Date: Wed, Oct 16, 2019 at 5:38 PM Subject: Headlight Dipper Question To: Tigers Den Hi, In looking at old photos of my Tiger it appears that the bracket for the headlight "dipper" is mounted on top of the carpet. My new carpet has a nice rubber grommet that fits nicely over the switch plunger which would make me think the carpet should go OVER the switch. But the new carpet isn't really shaped to fit around the bracket. So, my question is, should the bracket be under the carpet or on top of it? Diaphragm fuel pumps will degrade with the alcohol fuel blends, the alcohol attacks the rubber diaphragm and other gasket parts. I know because I had a diaphragm fuel pump just barely get me home one evening. The rubber diaphragm was a total mess when I took that pump apart. I really don't know how it worked long enough to get me home but so glad it did. The article in Auto Restorer is about a gear pump that is compatible with modern fuel bends. The author Randy Rundle enters the Great Race. The 12 v pump has a peak of 4 psi and can deliver 30 gallons per hour - cost $95 with a fuel filter. 30 gallons per hour is 2X the volume of the stock SU pump and can thus support more than 200 HP engines probably up to 400 HP. I always like to have options available so I can decide on the best path to follow. I have not investigated this product but it looks like a proven fuel pump from a Great Race participant I have had good luck with Sta-Bil, fuel stabilizer and StarTron, Enzyme fuel treatment. These days we all need to be vigilant checking fuel system components ? fuel filters for contamination, fuel hoses for weakness ? safety first. Ron Fraser From: Dave Munroe Sent: Wednesday, October 30, 2019 12:00 PM To: Ron Fraser ; Tiger List Subject: Re: [Tigers] electric fuel pumps FYI Thanks Ron; Great lead on an ethanol-proofQ fuel pump. Ethanol attacks more than just the fuel pump diaphragm. Ask me how I know. I am lucky to live in an ethanol-free gas pump Province. ( Nova Scotia) However, our Province to the north, (New Brunswick) is not. Returning home from a trip through N.B. in the early days of ignorance about evil ethanol, I filled up with some e-fuel, and put the car away with about 1/2 tank for the winter. Big Mistake. In the spring, getting the car out resulted in nasty surprise: it wouldn't start. Investigation revealed the float bowl was laden with a thick "gummy" paste. Long story short, not only the carb had to be cleaned, but everything from the tanks, through the filters, fuel pump and rubber fuel line connectors were fouled with this ugly stuff. The fuel tanks, pump diaphragm, full filters and rubber line connectors had to be cleaned and/or replaced. If you put your car away with a partially filled tank of ethanol laced fuel, any condensation that forms on the tank above the fuel level will combine with the ethanol and form this gummy paste on the bottom, and get sucked up through the fuel line into the carb. Disaster ensues. Always put your car away with a full tank, and use fuel stabilizer to keep the fuel fresh. Up here in N.S. we also use "SeaFoam" additive. Look it up. Ethanol is a PITA to vintage car owners wirh cars fitted with carbs.
