[Tigers] "Carbonized" Bolt Head?

Carbonize is a surface process, if you paint the bolts the paint will chip when installing the bolts.
You might want to check in a Machinists handbook about the carbonizing process. I think it can be duplicated DIY style.
Seems to me I once read you heat the bolts in charcoal then put them in oil to cool. I’m not sure about that being the correct process and I don’t remember all the detail if it is the correct process. Do some research on the process.
You might want to look at Gun Blue or Eastwood’s Black Oxide process that etches the metal surface a little and leave color.
If you leave the bolts in Evapo-Rust long enough the bolts will get a darkened surface, some of it may wipe off but let it dry and see if it meets your expectations.

According to the BON, some of the bolt heads in the engine compartment are "carbonized". Anyone have an idea of which paint color can create the carbonized look?
