[Tigers] "Numbers Matching" engine for Sunbeam Tigers

OK Tom you dragged me in.

This type of discussion is partly why I started the Original Tiger Engine Study but mostly I started it because back in 2008 there were many questions about “What color should my tiger engine be painted?” and I was curious. Ford changed engine color for the 1966 Model year from black to blue. Many B19KC engines are painted blue for that reason; from there I continued on a quest to learn more about the Ford/ Tiger engine configuration and so began the Tiger Engine Study.

Basically, original Tiger engines have several ID elements all of which can be removed, transferred or discarded, unfortunately. Once the ID elements are removed there are Ford and Rootes specific parts for the Tiger engines which again can be removed, transferred or discarded.

If all these Tiger elements are removed then it comes down to the casting dates of parts and the assembly dates of the engines which may or may not be unique to Tiger engines. I would need a great deal more participation in the Original Tiger Engine Study to quantify a better answer about dates for all the Tiger engine groups.

On my Tiger, 1967 Mark 2 built @ December 1966 the date code on the engine is about a month earlier. That'd the one on the block below the left cylinder head. I can't say if the engine's listed on the build, but the engine is not (as far as I know, and this applies generally to Ford engines) serial numbered. I can't absolutely swear it's the original engine because I bought the car nine years later, but I can guarantee it was in the car when I bought it. Ron Frasier's doing a study on Tigers that includes date codes. Ron: any thoughts?
