I did a little bit of research. Dort 3 and 4 are pretty much equivalent. Dot
4 has a bit of an extra ingredient , borate ester, to increase the boiling
point a smidge.  Otherwise they are interchangeable. I suspect that those
who use it exclusively take the recommendation to use the highest boiling
point for the manufacturers spec that there is.  For me, it is probably a
good idea since I live in the shadow of death valley, lol. Even though I
will not be auto crossing or racing my car nor doing any spirited driving.
Just because it is hotter here. I do think that in cooler climes that Dot 3
would be entirely satisfactory for normal driving.  Dot 3 and Dot 4 are
fully compatible according to what I have read just tonight. 

In all things, YMMV.

Humm....   I don't know the answer, but why does my 1999  C5 Corvette
specify DOT 3??
If DOT 4 is better, wouldn't they have used that?
