                You have it correct.

According to my 1975 Autolite Spark Plug Service Manual - heat range numbers

Cold - 0 to 3

Medium - 4 to 7 BF42 is in this range

Hot - 8 to 11 to Extremely hot 15 BF82 is in the hot range

The first letter "B" stands for 18mm

The bigger problem is that spark plug manufactures change their product
lines and nomenclature without notice.

DW, what exactly do you mean by "depth of plug"? If you mean the center
electrode is longer, yeah, longer is hotter. So a BF42 is colder than a BF82
I think. Might have it the other way around.

I just checked the autox archives, there are quite few threads on plugs, I
have not looked at all of them.

However, I have seen this before: (below)

I STILL don't know what the deal is about the Autolite heat ranges mentioned
below...

BTW, I did look at OLDER plugs, CLEARLY there is a difference in depth
between the BF 42 and BF 82!

Compare the depth of the plugs removed with the ones going back in.

Beware!

A recent spark plug purchase has brought heat range availability into
question.

A bought Autolite 45 (old BRF 42) and 46 (old BRF 82).

Been a long time since I bought any 45s.

I could not tell which one is the hotter plug!

They look the same!

Looks like Autolite has changed their 45 plug?

Anyone been down this road recently?

...or noticed their 45s are hotter then they should be?

 DW
