[Tigers] Mechanical clatter- Sat PM Test

At one time I had a '72 Mach 1 that had the factory flex fan. Ford had a recall and replaced it because apparently a Ford mechanic had been killed when the fan came apart while working on a car. I've made sure not to put vital body parts in the line of fire since then.

That's why you shouldn't stand in line with the fan when the engine is running, especially when revving it up. If it comes apart it can do some damage.

Hello All
IT IS THE FAN. Another local tiger guy came by to put another set of eyes and ears on the problem. Sure enough, with the fan running, he detected some wobble/vibration in one of the blades. We removed the fan for a closer inspection. Sure enough one of the blades had a longitudinal crack in the aluminum blade running right along where it is riveted to the hub. The crack ran 3/4 of the way from the base of the blade to the end...probably getting close to total failure.
So now time for a new fan. Attached is a photo of the current fan. It is a 13 inch, 7 blade flex fan. Center hole is 5/8”

Any recommendations on replacement options. The current fan fit easily, allowed for plenty of clearance and did its job. Is there a better option?
Thanks for all the help.
Jim

I'm still voting for the fan. Especially since it looks you have a flex fan and the sound goes away at higher rpm. Have you watched the rear of the fan blades and all edges of the fan all the way around and there is nothing even remotely close?
I don't recall the Tiger generator very well. Does it have a fan on the back of the pulley? It could be that the bearing is worn enough that when there is tension of a belt on the pulley, it pulls the generator pulley and its little fan over just enough of motion that it is touching the face of the generator body or a screw that sits up a bit.

Good Morning Listers
Thanks for all the input. This morning I removed the fan belt...and voila...the noise disappeared. Video with sound is below. I had a before video also but it made the email too large.
I made a checklist of yesterday’s input and here are the results:
Pulley hubs: All secure, no wobble
Spin fan & gen: No odd sounds...no contact with anything.
Dipstick: Straight
Fan & individual blades: Secure
Water level: Perfect
Gas: Shell 93 octane...always.
So what do you think. The fan is not hitting anywhere. With the fanbelt off the timing chain would continue to run...but no noise. I think those results rule our fan contact and stretched timing chain.
That leaves me with failing water pump. Although I am still a bit concerned that I did not hear any noisy bearings when I spun the fan or listened at the pump cover with the stethoscope.
Your thoughts/ideas please.
Thanks
Jim
