[Tigers] Pertronix Ignition

Tom

I sent the original instructions that came with my Ignitor I system.

It looks like the date of my instructions is 1987 and it appears your instructions are dated 12/01 – big difference.

I found the sales slip for my Ignitor – 1995.

Just goes to show you that Pertronix has been upgrading their system, components and instructions for their system and we need to pay attention to what parts we have.

I have gone through 2 coils that did not like the full time 12v or actually 13.7v when the alternator is running; one started to leak oil and the other one died, so the ballast resistor is active on my engine.

Wow, Ron I wonder where that install manual came from? I have attached the PDF as an attachment of the Ignitor (first gen) instruction sheet I have and it contradicts the one you have. The illustration on page 1 shows the red wire connecting BEFORE the ballast resistor (12V +).

                         Yours Mine

And on the page 2 “FAQ” it states:

Q. How to correct a low voltage problem (bold mine)?

A. First, if you have an external ballast resistor, connect the red Ignitor™ wire to the ignition wire

prior to the ballast resistor. Second, if you do not have a ballast resistor you must locate a 12

volt source that is controlled by the ignition switch to connect the red Ignitor™ wire to.

Confounding, isn’t it.

Pertronix 1 install diagram and troubleshoot chart

Ignitor attaches after the ballast resistor

The current Pertronix coil may be full time 12V but I have not looked at that.
