I believe this is the aluminum case transmission I had in my 1982 Ford F150.  It is not felt to be robust, and the gearing is quite wide.  I cracked the case once just by shutting down the truck by popping the clutch.....  I believe this has been discussed on the forum in the past.  David

I?m not using one but when this has come up before it was not deemed to not be a good idea. It had something to do with the ratio spread, the... for lack of a better term ?swiftness? of the shifting and I believe even strength was an issue. But, yes at one time I had considered it an option too.

The one Toploader I have been hoping to find (aside from the now pricy 2.78 wide ratio) is a Jeep Toploader that had 3.01, 2.08, 1.47, 1.00. While it is still a 1:1 ratio 4th gear the 3.01 1st gear allows for a taller tire and the ratios have a more even spread. The taller tire effectively compared to stock would be equal to some degree of overdrive. That Toploader only came in 1980-86 Jeep Pick ups. I?ve scoured 100+ self serve yards and never found one looking for 15+ years. If anyone is interested the number is T-178 though Jeep likely uses a more specific number. The T-176 and T-177 are rock crawler trans and though far more prevalent do not have decent ratios.
