one thing you can try, to make the inside rod effectively shorter

Is to push it in and rotate it,

Then pull it back up.

The rod has a "blade" that slides in a slot to keep it from rotating.

If the blade is out of the slot, it doesn't come up as far.

...it also doesn't lock down the sliding adjuster as tightly.

And if it doesn't stay tight, the rod can rotate back into the slot and come back out fully.

It's a bit of a half baked "fix", and I wouldn't do it to an others car, but I have done it on my own before. It worked well for the time I did it.
