It's called a top loader because the access cover for building the transmission is in the top of the case, IE, you load the gear set from the top. On a side loader, the access is on the side where the shift linkage is.

Why is it that our Ford transmissions are called top-loaders?
It the shifter went into the box, I could understand, but it operates
leavers on the side.........
