Hey, Joel:
Andy Walker here in Edmond, OK. Having just been through most of this stuff, I thought I’d chime in and help you out as so many of the good folks on this list did for me. I can only tell you what I did in some of these cases, but I’m sure one of these days I’ll have someone really critique my car to see just how close I came to getting it right.
Hood latch: CAD plated, not body color (both the latch on the car and the striker on the hood). The CAD plating I had done on my latch pieces was a bit dull and I ended up taking some 0000 steel wool to them and gave them a nice semi-sheen. From what I’ve seen on other cars, they look pretty well right.
Hood release: It’s my understanding that most of the Mk1As had the pull cable and not the pull rod of the earlier Tigers. However, this was one of the few places where I consciously deviated from stock; I used the release rod from an earlier Tiger. I’d heard too many horror stories of cables breaking and just didn’t think it was worth the risk. Others may feel differently, but I chose what I would consider to be the safer route. Since I didn’t use the cable, I cannot comment on the proper way that it would connect to the latch mechanism.
Grille center badge bracket: I didn’t mess with mine during my build, but I know it is not supposed to be body color. They should be black, but I’m guessing more of a satin finish rather than gloss; I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong. IIRC, there should be a nut welded onto the bottom of the sheetmetal that forms the lower grille opening that the bottom foot of the bracket bolts to.
Trunk or engine area lighting: I don’t believe that any Tigers had factory-installed “courtesy lights” in either the trunk or the under-hood areas. Having said that, I seem to remember seeing a wiring schematic showing an under-hood light, but I’ll bet my eye teeth that it was probably an option that could have been purchased from a dealer.
Blower motor and switch: IIRC, the Mk1As had the two-speed blower motor (my car, #1600, has the two-speed motor). The switch is located in the far left hole on the dash and should have the “Blower” surround ring pinched under the switch mounting ring and the dash. I don’t know anything about an auxiliary lamp for the blower unit.
Defroster vent hoses: I had to go to Rick at Sunbeam Specialties on this one on my car. Sure enough, he said that the hoses are held in place with black tape and were that way from the factory. A friend of mine had some of what he called “black friction tape” that had a little texture to it and we used that. I’m neither recommending that nor trying to scare you off of it; I’d just prefer to wait and see how long it holds on my car before I recommend it to anyone.
Slide temp and defroster controls: IIRC, they attach to the heater/defroster control bezel studs that stick through the dash. The just nut down on the back of the dash. Let me know if you need more detail and I’ll look at what the parts book says as far as what type of washer was used.
Dash mounting screws: These have a black “carbonized” finish to them; they look very similar to the way a gun would look after being re-blued.
Dash holes on either side of steering column: These are where the semi-circular filler plate mounts that takes up the space between the steering column and the lower dash roll. The plate has one stud on each side that goes through those holes with nuts and washers on the backside.
Lower valance capture nuts: If I understand you correctly, those are for the English-style number plate mounting bracket.
Two holes in the passenger side lower front fender: If these are behind the front wheel and are low on the fender, then they are undoubtedly the mounting holes for the Chrysler Pentastar medallion that came on the later cars.
I hope I have helped you out somewhat. If I’m wrong about any of this stuff, I’m sure that others more knowledgeable than I will chime in and set the record straight.
Best of luck, Joel,
Andy

Subject: [Tigers] 1966 MK 1A Tiger questions
Hello all,
Questions abound while trying to put the 1966 MK 1A 2193 Tiger back together.
1. Hood latch is it body color or other
2. Hood release, is it cable or rod and if rod, how to attach to release – special clevis pin.
3. Grill center badge bracket – what does bottom of bracket bolt to
4. Brill center badge bracket – body color or gloss black
5. Trunk or engine area – are there any lights or is only light inside the glove box
6. Blower switch location in dash. #1 aux lamp if fitted – far left hole in dash.
7. Blower motor – single or 2 speed
8. Defroster vent hoses fit ‘inside’ of metal vents – how held in place – clamps or tape and if tape diameter and color.
9. Slide temp control and floor defroster settings – how are they held in place
10. Wood dash tapered heads to hold dash in place – Phillips tapered head, 1-1/2 or 1-1/4 inch long – are these stainless steel. SS sells the far right one but not sure of the others.
11. Wood dash – steering column area – 1 hole on either side of column opening – what are they for.
12. Lower valance – 2 captive nuts on either side of center opening – what are they for.
13. Passenger lower front fender, there are 2 holes in body – 1 small then a larger one just beneath – what goes here.
When it takes a number of years to reconstruct, memory fades and with multiple folks not taking picture and notes while I had to work – my fault, so thanks in advance.
Joel Martin
