Ron- it is imperative you match the ring gear to correct starter bendix. A parts store without an older employee that is aware of the 157 and 160 tooth flywheel ring gear will sell you whatever starter that will bolt up. Unfortunately it is easy to install a new flywheel but pulling the engine isn't as easy as changing a ring gear. May well be to late for your ring gear but it is easy to change out the bendix so "others" can make sure they have a bendix that matches their ring gear.TonytheTiger(TtT)

MessageI found a comment which makes sense to me. Flywheel ring gear was changed from 160 to 157 teeth to improve starter gear engagement. Ring gear OD = 13.258" circumference = 41.65"41.65"/ 160 = .26"41.65" / 157 = .2653" Maybe this is why my 160 tooth original ring gear was all chewed up. I have not found a date when Ford made this change to 157 teeth. Ron Fraser
