Having done this myself, I would agree with Ron - practice, practice, 
practice. I also believe that it is
best to glue the parts in place first and let the glue dry, then add the 
nails. Again, as Ron says,
you can drill some small holes for the nails rather than trying to drive 
them in straight and
risk cracking the wood. The nails probably will not add much in the way 
of strength,
especially in light of the improvement in more modern glues. Another 
line of approach,
which I haven't tried, is to use a light duty nail gun. I don't  know if 
you can get nails that look
like the originals, though.
