Don't know if the Tiger D44 is all that strong with the axle set up but
the D44 is a solid rear end could be.
My first hand with the D44 was I broke a couple of time in an
International Scout that I had swapped a healthy street 372" SBC into.
On one explode I twisted the pinion shaft apart the while speed shifting
with a mattress on top of the car, the other was asimilar but exploded
the spider gears in a similar situation without the mattress on top.
This was in a 1980 IH Scout with large tires and a young and
enthusiastic driver ;)

I think the axle diameter in the D44 is larger then the stock 9".
Overall I would say the 9" is all around stronger the the D44 and
lighter as well but I don't think a D44 would be a problem in a tiger
unless you have some very wide and sticky tires. I have used the
aluminum dropout with good results on the track car. One good thing to
remember is the narrow and small tires on the tiger are a fuse for your
drivetrain.
If someone buys the car I'll trade them for my D44 out of the tiger :)
But I have all the parts for a rebuild on the D44 in the tiger except
I'll likely change the housing ends to small bearing ford so I can do an
easy wilwood brake swap. If I didn't have the D44 parts I would not
hesitate to dump the weight and use a ford 9" as it's just way easier to
work on.
