[Tigers] Possible solution to servo issue

When I did my 7" servo 12 years ago I sent the "can" off to a coating
company (like you would for pistons) and had the inside coated with a
"Teflon" type of coating. It has worked very well ever since.

The problem, I think, is the "can" is under a vacuum all the time and it
needs a special kind of lube that doesn't "gas out" (for lack of a better
term) when under a vacuum. I think that is why they dry out after a few
years. The grease that is supplied MIGHT be resistant to evaporating, but
it doesn't seem to last very long. If I were to do it again (without the
coating inside) I might try something that had a lot of graphite in it, that
way if the grease part evaporated away the graphite would stay.
Unfortunately I don't recall the type of grease I used when I did mine, but
I know it wasn't anything exotic.

Personally, I don't think the problem is in the booster, if there is pulling
to one side, how can the booster have an effect, it's upstream of the
"distribution block". My guess is in the caliper or the rubber hose. The
SS hoses work very well.

Very possible. With the Servo out put in a bypass line and
carefully check the brakes without the power assist.

The big piston in the Servo could be hanging up. I have 2 Rootes
servo rebuild kits one for the large servo and one for the smaller servo.
Neither kit had all the right parts to rebuild a servo correctly so it is
possible that the wrong foam piece was put into your servo.

When I rebuilt my servo, Tiger Tom recommended using Silicone Spray
lubricate on the leather seal. First I cleaned the leather seal several
times with Brake Kleen, let it dry then I soaked it several times with
Silicone Spray over a couple of days. My Servo has worked very well to this
day.

Are there other recommendation for lube on the leather seal?

I just spoke with someone and I thought I'd pass along what he said.

He suggested that it is just the huge piston of the servo sticking inside
the canister. He said to pull it off and if it is not leaking in there, to
lubricate the leather, and also to consider taking OUT the foam that is
under the piston. He said that he has heard that people have a lot of
success removing the foam and the servo still functions very well. He
suggested that taking the foam out was better even than lubricating the
leather - better in that it would have the biggest impact.

For lubricating the leather, he said he has heard a number of different
things, but doesn't know if any are better than the other.

So unless someone convinces me not to try this, that foam is coming out!
