    It does sound like this is the problem.
 
You need a volt/ ohm meter to see what the voltage is doing.

Sounds to me like the Voltage Limiter relay..  Fig 15 in the shop manual.
How high is the VOLTAGE when it drops off line?  Simple adjustment.
