Hi Jim,
 
I had something very similar happening. Every time I accelerated a
little aggressive I had that smell.
Then when I parked once with the tanks just filled, on a hill with the
drivers side down hill I had gas leaking all over. (Ask Steve Towle at
the British meet at Prince Edwards Island) All it turned out to be was
the rubber gasket under the gas gauge float unit, at the top of the
drivers side tank. It could be your problem is just as simple.
