Some things will be different, some will be the same. As before, if you want to send mail to tigers at autox.team.net you send mail to tigers at autox.team.net - you'd be surprised at how many folks can NOT figure that one out! With Mailman, managing your subscription should be more web friendly. You can go to the web pages listed in the messages and muck about with your settings. One major change is that there is now just the one list tigers at autox.team.net, the list tigers-digest at autox.team.net no longer exists. But this doesn't mean there is no digest format, it just means that one doesn't need to unsubscribe from one list and subscribe to the other just to switch formats. Go to the list pages, log in, and select digest or non-digest as you desire. Another handy option is the 'nomail' feature. If you are going to be away from your email for a while, you can set your membership to nomail, and then back to regular delivery upon your return. A bit easier than having to unsubscribe and then subscribe again. A useful way to make use of the nomail feature is to enable submissions from multiple addresses. For example, one might want to subscribe a-student at diploma.mill.edu as your main address. But sometimes you send mail from work, so you can subscribe busybee at monolith.com and set the second address to nomail. So messages you send from either address will pass the membership test, but you won't get multiple copies of each list message. RealSoonNow I'll have a web page that covers some more of the various differences and features. mjb. From mjb at autox.team.net Sat Jun 23 21:47:55 2007 From: mjb at autox.team.net (Mark J. I'm getting some ticking sounds that come and go. Sometimes it's pretty audible, other times completely quiet, especially when cold. The factory shop manual says to bleed down the lifters, set piston to TDC, adjust rocker arm nut until lash is taken up (push rod doesn't easily rotate) and then tighten two more turns. This resulted in very rough running and difficult idling speed, so clearly they were too tight. At present I have them at zero lash plus a little bit but am wondering if there is another procedure that's more definitive. Then, with the engine running, back off the nut until you hear a clattering sound. Slowly retighten the nut until the clattering just stops. From there some go anywhere from 1/8th to 1/2 a turn tighter. That said, you might be wondering how oil doesn't get all over the place. An old valve cover with an opening in the top helps. Some engines allow for clips on the rockers to redirect "most" of the oil. Others may have more specific advice. But, yes, your adjustment sounds too tight. Be aware that the "potential" exists to create coil bind on the valve spring, exsessive load on the cam lobe and an engine run too long in this state can burn valves because the heat to not being conducted out properly. Likely you have done no damage, but don't let the condition persist. Seems I spun the nut off the lower ball joint at some point during the rally on Saturday... and thank God that it didn't happen climbing some of the passes at elevation on very narrow two lane roads with no guard rails and possibly causing much more damage to the car, and severely injuring my wife and I... well the Healey guys are a great bunch, much like us Tiger folk, and they got me back running again within an hour.. Anyway, the point I want to make is: do yourselves a favor, and check your lower ball joints... if you DO NOT have the castle-nut with a cotter pin in place, and have the plastic--nut type, GET RID OF THEM !!! After speaking to Tom Hall this past weekend at Tigers United, there have been other cases of these type of ball joints mal-functioning, and I dread to think of what could have happened to us if we were at speed!!! Luckily, my damage is only body work (about $2000) and I am able to drive it... remember.. these are 40 year old vehicles and they like to be tinkered and pampered with, to keep them running.. regards, Mike Rapoza From sunbeamtiger at prodigy.net Tue Jun 26 05:59:48 2007 From: sunbeamtiger at prodigy.net (Paul R Sheahan) Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2007 04:59:48 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Tigers] Brock's Tiger Shirts Message-ID: <381012.17321.qm@web51009.mail.re2.yahoo.com> Everyone, I have several of these shirts and have been very happy with them. If after using Tom's method of adjustment you still have the clicking problem, you can eliminate it by replacing the oil pump with a high flow pump (not high pressure) and heavy duty pump drive shaft. This can be done in the car by just dropping the oil pan. John Logan ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. (2) i am thinking of getting dan williams toploaders (http://www.toploadertransmissions.com) to rebuild my 4 speed toploader (since it is out of the car anyway), but thinking of going with a wider ratio, lower gears for 1st through 3rd, same 1:1 for 4th (for instance going from 2:32 for 1st gear to a 2:78). what is people's experience and views with respect to this? my tiger is disassembled and body is at dougs, so now is the time for me to easily rebuild the tranny (even though it was fine before i disassembled the car). i dont care much about mpg, but DO care about speed/acceleration. i may rebuild the 4 sp toploader and put it on the shelf, and put in a 5 speed to enjoy and be able to cruise at 80 mph on the highway for long trips... but i do want it looking original. thanks peter From Theo.Smit at dynastream.com Wed Jun 27 14:01:39 2007 From: Theo.Smit at dynastream.com (Smit, Theo) Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 14:01:39 -0600 Subject: [Tigers] trannies Message-ID: <60FEBF2884916145962401D18221D157108AFC@dsimail.ad.garmin.com> Tom Hall (ModTiger Engineering) makes the T5 conversion kit using a custom rear housing, which properly positions the shifter and has the correct speedo drive. All the other T5 conversions are based on nearly unobtainable AMC or S-10 rear housings that also have some problems left up to the user to resolve. For the top loader: If you're staying with the 2.88 rear end then having a shorter first gear (2.78) and wider ratios makes sense. However, if you have a zoomy engine and 3:31 or higher diff ratio then the 2.32 first gear is the way to go, because otherwise you'll end up shifting out of first before you cross an intersection. If you do go with the 5 speed conversion then the same thing applies - get the narrowest (lowest numerical) ratio you can for first gear, especially if you have a shorter final drive ratio. (2) i am thinking of getting dan williams toploaders (http://www.toploadertransmissions.com) to rebuild my 4 speed toploader (since it is out of the car anyway), but thinking of going with a wider ratio, lower gears for 1st through 3rd, same 1:1 for 4th (for instance going from 2:32 for 1st gear to a 2:78). what is people's experience and views with respect to this? my tiger is disassembled and body is at dougs, so now is the time for me to easily rebuild the tranny (even though it was fine before i disassembled the car). i dont care much about mpg, but DO care about speed/acceleration. i may rebuild the 4 sp toploader and put it on the shelf, and put in a 5 speed to enjoy and be able to cruise at 80 mph on the highway for long trips... but i do want it looking original. thanks peter _______________________________________________ lwall at wt-inc.com Tigers at autox.team.net http://autox.team.net/mailman/listinfo/tigers From maliburevue at yahoo.com Wed Jun 27 20:59:46 2007 From: maliburevue at yahoo.com (Gary Crandall) Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 19:59:46 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Tigers] trannies In-Reply-To: <478281.64653.qm@web53607.mail.re2.yahoo.com> Message-ID: <891620.53979.qm@web33215.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Peter, I kept my original 2.88 rearend ratio and added positraction. I also converted my transmission to a wide ratio setup. Not only the standard wide ratio, but I swapped the 2.78 1st gear with a 2.90 1st gear from David Kee Toploaders. The gear ratio spread now matches the first 4 gears of a 5 speed exactly. I am running a 331 stroker, Dan Walters Torque arm and 13" wheels, 205/60-13. First gear gives outstanding acceleration, so hard that I can't even dump the clutch from a standing start without completely frying the tires. I even break loose from a rolling start at 20 mph. Same in second. Granted, a lot of that has to do with the stroker engine, but even still the ultra low first gear is a real stump puller, regardless of the engine. The best part (other than the acceleration) is that I usually don't get into 4th gear driving around town, only on the highway, which is perfect for getting better gas mileage, especially with today's prices. In college I had a Tiger with a close ratio transmission and 3.31 gears. The gear ratios were so close that I spent all my time just shifting. First gear wasn't nearly as low as I now have and in fourth gear I was turning 3500 rpm at 70 mph. Now I'm at around 3000 at 70 mph. In my opinion the wide ratio (or better yet the extra wide ratio) with 2.88 rearend gears is the best of both worlds, short of installing a 5 speed and a heck of a lot cheaper I might add; several hundred vrs several thousand. I highly recommend it. I have attached an Excel workbook for close ratio, wide ratio and 5 speed transmissions conversions. Plug in your tire size, maximum shift point rpm, wide ratio 1st gear and 5 speed 5th gear ratios (all yellow background cells) and it will compute your speed in each gear for 2.88, 3.07, 3.31, 3.54 and 3.73 rearend ratios. Go to the indidual worksheets for close ratio, wide ratio and 5 speed to compare rpm ranges for each individual gear for every rearend ratio. These worksheets are good for determining how your engine's torque curve fits into your shift points. Also compare the graphs on gear setups and acceleration. You see that my wide ratio matches the 5 speed, except for overdrive. Hope this helps. Gary P.S. My brother-in-law went to Wharton. He's a self made millionaire. Well, I know it's too heavy because after turning a corner there is no return of the wheel to self center. I have tried increasing the caster and that just made it harder to turn, but still no return after turning a corner. I have everything apart. I changed the upper and lower ball joints a few years back and the both stub axles turn easily and smoothly. The u-joints are new and turn easily and smoothly. The steering column with everything disconnected spins very easily with no drag whatsoever. Now the rack....I had one of our lister experts check it out a few years ago and it was fine. But, with everything installed and connected and the car on a lift, I can feel a little bump, bump, bump as I turn push and pull on the tires. With the rack removed, I can feel the same thing. Putting a u-joint on the serrated shaft and turning by hand (on the bench) I can feel the bump, bump bump. Is this normal? The rack has the proper amount of fluid. I have no other rack handy to compare the feeling to so I don't know what it should feel like. The rack is the only thing I can find that might be contributing to this heavy steering. After having the rack inspected, I don't think there is abnormal wear in it. I realize there is a damper adjustment and a pinion endfloat adjustment. The question is, to get this symptom would something be too tight or too loose? Thanks, Mark ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Are the steering arms reversed or mounted inside out somehow? If the Ackerman was really messed up (I mean REALLY badly, not just what the designers did) then it could cause a lack of self-centering. It is also necessary to have the U-joints in phase, i.e. the flanges on each end of the middle link have to be aligned. I don't think that having this wrong would cause as severe an effect as you're describing though. Are you using reasonably close to stock wheels and tires? Again, I don't think that this is something that can cause the behaviour you're describing unless you go way outside the normal envelope. I've only ever encountered a lack of self-centering on my race Corolla when I was using 1 1/4" wheel spacers, lower-offset-than-stock (and 3 inches wider) wheels, race slicks, shortened steering arms, and THEN tossed the car sideways through a corner. And yes, with 9" slicks and 2 turns lock to lock on the steering, the steering effort was brutal. I ended up having to go to a larger diameter steering wheel and spacing it towards me to prevent forearm cramps. To me it looks Tiger. I think those "bonnet reliefs" look like "LAT-25 vents for steel hood" (IIRC, unfotunately TigersUnited.com does not have a picture on-line)... The "racing number" might(?) be from the fire retardant effect on top of the hot engine.. I don't see wire wheels but aluminum wheels with larger width in the back.. and it looks to me that the rear wheel opening is opened up. And it does look like the bumperette, I think you can see the rear one too. Maybe an Alger? At any rate, I think the fire retardant can just be hosed off.. maybe the pilot purposely hit it to save it!?
