I think  he probably did know that they were 
at least the proper kind of rivet and  the patina of the parts involved was 
 
I wonder if it isn't the "patina" that they are looking for.   I'm sure a 
professional could recreate something that would pass.  I'd like  to see one of 
these professionals tested on that:-)
