 Gary,
Wow, I did not know that CVAR eliminated HP.  As you know we have a strong SCCA HP class, which is 2E VSCDA.  We have 6 that race in our group.  I am going and I know several others 2Es that are going.  This event is gaining a lot of National interest and I expect more 948s.
In regard to other more modified cars, Jeff Porada is right.  We try to accommodate most cars and if they meet VSCDA and 2972 GCR Requirements they will be in the more Vintage Classes of 2E Bug Eyes for 948 and 2D Square Bodies for 1275
I have listed our Rules and Regulations for Sprite Midget Race Series below:
2024 VSCDA SpriteMidget Race Series Rules and Regulations

(Revision 6/23/24)

I. Objective: Increase numbers for Racing Spridgets @ VSCDAEvents by having:

A. More cars, which, will allowmore wheel to wheel racing safely within Spridget Classes (with classes forvarious levels of preparation).

B. Continued tradition establishedby Thickos through camaraderie and group get together (cook out lunch Saturdayand Sunday, British Pub Saturday evening when a 3 day race weekend along withtechnical and moral support through group).

C. Series Points developed fromEarlier Vintage Vee model. Including durability (laps completed) from 1stSprint Race, Fastest time from 1st Qualification Race and Position for SpridgetRace in a best 2 out of 3 race weekends identified in series.

D. To embrace vintage sports carracing philosophy and etiquette of VSCDA’s Driver Policy with an emphasis onSafety.

E. Encourage street Austin Healeys& MGs as spectators by offering special parking near our Spridget Compoundinviting them to join in the fun and encourage track touring session andassisting as crew.

Note: Revisions to this document will be highlighted in yellow sochanges from previous documents can be seen more easily. Date of revision willbe listed at top of document.

II. VSCDA Sprite Midget Point Races 2024:

A. Gingerman May 4 & 5 – (May 2&3 DriverSchool)

B. Blackhawk Classic June 14-16

C. Grattan Grand Finale August 9-11

III. Racing Classes per VSCDA / SCCA (1972 Classifications Guidelinesfor Points and Awards) Revamp with 1972 GCR / PCS Focus. Our intent isto have anyone interested in racing a Vintage Spridget to join us. This is adouble edge sword since an individual may have their own personal opinion ofwhy they think they should or should not be in a certain class. Vintage Racinghas many clubs throughout the US and Canada with different criteria than ours.We have 3 levels within 3 classes that should allow anyone interested in racingto have a place to compete with other similar prepared racing Spridgets. Werecognize that everyone has an opinion of what is fair, based on their logic. We have tried to make that more defined by 1972 SCCA GCR Specificationsdetailed, which is a VSCDA requirement. We would like to encourage placing theproper designation on your car & when you register.

IV. SMRS 1972 SCCA GCR / PCS Highlight of Requirements.

A. Background: VSCDA definesRegulations for Group 2 cars like our Sprites and Midgets from the VSCDAWebsite and updated 3/28/22 titled TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR RACE CARS:

B. VSCDA - SCCA 1967 General CompetitionRules Appendix A/Article. Production Category Sports Cars (w/PCS sheets) andafter review, 1972 and prior cars homologated to similar regulations publishedby FIA and some other sanctioning bodies.

C. Objective: Now that we have acopy of SCCA’s 1972 GCR /PCS rev 1/73 we actually have facts on what wasrequired then vs what we heard or thought it might be. This document isavailable to anyone that would like an electronic copy. The goal for thisdocument is to highlight requirements as of 1972 GCR that would impact SquareBody Sprites and Midgets on common areas of misunderstanding. For the sake ofcommonality and consensus within our group Mk1 Bug Eyes will also follow 1972GCR requirements, which is consistent with VSCDA requirements.

D. 1972 SCCA GCR Highlights (thefollowing highlights are for those wanting to run in ERA Correct 2E Bug Eye or2D Square Body class). Comments are in ( ) for clarification:

VI. Race Series Points 2024 awarded from accumulation of 2 ofthe 3 designated races of Gingerman, Black Hawk Farms, and Grattan.

A. 1st Sprint Race (DurabilityPoints per class) represent 1/3 of total points during race weekend. The FirstSprint Race is usually held on Saturday (maximum 8 points). If a racercompletes less than the most completed laps available by a similar class racerthe results will be based on a percentage of that 8 points rounded up.  These points reward endurance. If the classsession has less than 8 laps and a competitor completed all laps available theywill be awarded 8 points.

B. 1st Qualification (Fastest Timeper class): Points are awarded per C below except based on fastest time.

C. Sprite Midget Exclusive Race(Finishing Position per class): Points are awarded based on finishing position.First (8 points), Second (7), Third (6), Fourth (5), Fifth (4), Sixth (3),Seventh (2) & all other finishers (1). If there are more than 8 racers in class the minimumpoints awarded are 1.

D. A racer can accumulate up to 16points for Qualification and Sprint Race along with additional points for theFeature Race or Exclusive Sprite Midget Race. The maximum points awarded perrace weekend would be 24. The maximum accumulated in the best 2 out of 3 serieswould be 48 points.

E. A driver will not receive pointsfor a session in which they were involved in an on track incident resulting ina disciplinary action from the VSCDA Drivers Committee.

F. If a driver enters all 4eligible race weekends he or she can throw out the worst weekends, which willallow any mechanical or other issues to be discounted. Final results will betallied from the 2 weekends with the most accumulated points unless otherwise notifiedby racer.

G. An overall winner will beselected regardless of class based on a perfect score of 48 points from 2 raceweekends. If more than one racer has highest points accumulated it will beconsidered an overall winner tie.

H. Awards will be presented atGrattan per the above Class Categories at the end of the last Group 2 race.

I. These awards are in the spiritof Vintage Sports Car Philosophy recognizing fun and durability by completingthe most laps per race weekend contributing 1/3 of total available.

V. Race Series Special Awards (these awards will be determinedby drivers and crew and awarded with end of season awards):

A. Gary Kropf Spirit Award for Vintage Spridgets (Traveling LargePiston Award). Criteria:

1. Fast, safe, courteous driver,(promotes the “vintage spirit”)

2. Assists others within thepaddock – repairs, parts, advice. Willing to jump into help and assist otherSpridget make the next session.

3. Quick to organize groupactivity – brats for lunch “all pork weekend”, watching other group races, fromthe best vantage points, coordinating seating at dinner, etc.

4. Volunteers with the VSCDA oncommittees, and sub-committees

B. Jim Donato Sprite Midget Race Series Most Respected Driver Award(Traveling Steering Wheel in a display case Award) Criteria:

1. Predictable / Trusted (usesmirrors, points faster cars by, passes safely and allows others room to pass andis always a defensive driver over winning at all cost), stays on racing lineexcept when car failures would leave fluids on track or safety is a concern)

2. Objective: Listens to othersand approaches other drivers that they may have an issue with in an open and fair way. Can sitdown with any driver and feel comfortable that they did the right thing when onthe track.

3. Observant: Looks forward toobserve incidents and flag stations, inspects car between sessions for safetyto avoid causing accidents to others on track.

4. Respectful: Avoids Red Mist, which is identified as an emotional win at all costs attitude and maintainsVintage Spirit Philosophy.

VI. Abbreviations andclarifications:

GCR = SCCA General CompetitionRules

PCS = SCCA Production CarSpecifications

ERA Correct = 1972 SCCA GCR forGroup 2 Production Sports Car Class (Bug Eye & Square Body). Up until thistime we have only had 1275 engines for Square Bodies. Other considerations willbe made if 1098 or later 1500cc race cars join us.

M1= Modification Preparation (Thisclass is for Spridgets more slightly modified beyond ERA correct including allBug Eyes over 1098cc and or additional weight reductions of 10%)

M2= Modification Preparation (Thisidentifies Spridgets more highly modified beyond M1 with more recent SCCA racedcars and or additional weight reduction of 15%)

I think “old H Prod cars” (SCCA ‘72 GCR/PCS) are already welcomed by VSCDA in Class 2E.  CVAR killed class H Prod several years ago, and I have the only surviving car.  I hope that I’m going to have some other 948 Bugeyes to race with at RA in Sept.  It’s a really long tow from Texas and I don’t want to be the Lone Ranger like in 2019.

No axe to grind here but several cars that I raced against back in my VSCDA days had glass bonnets and boot lids. I would suggest let the car run as M1 or M2 but on Dunlop treaded Street TD’s (?) to negate the slicks advantage. We mayBe at a point to where old H prod cars need tobe welcomed. Take advantage of it!EZ

Just for some clarification… As I’m understanding it, if it fits the 1972 rules, it goes under 2E or 2D and if it’s got larger flares or modifications that are not 1972 correct they are welcome to join but are classed as M1 or M2? I have customers asking me these questions all the time and from what it seems in the group, you all are very welcoming and just want more cars involved, but I get some customers that have a car that was built in the 80’s and seem to think they wouldn’t be able to run with us. I want to make sure I’m clear before I go telling them things that aren’t correct.
It’s been a learning curve for us in getting a happy race car. We’re rebuilding the engine from the Gingerman weekend currently and are working on ways to test it before I get to spend another weekend chasing leaks and blown head gaskets.

Thanks for the help and see you all at Road America!!!

Stan:

I bought this roller from Don Feller years ago with the intention of building a vintage spridget.  It’s a roller (no engine or transmission) and is disassembled.  Don’s son raced it as a limited prep midget in SCCA.

Welded differential

5-gallon fuel cell

Fuel pumps

Steel hood, trunk and fenders

Fiberglass hood, truck and fenders

Typical analog gauges

I’d like to get $1,500 for it all but open to reasonable offers.

Let me know if you need more information or more pictures (I photographed all the parts prior to disassembling)

Thanks for your help, Stan.

Mike,

Thanks for your interest.  Do you have a racing Spridget?

If you go to VSCDA's website you will find more details:  Technical-Requirements-for-Race-Cars-2022.pdf (vscda.org)

We have a SMRS (Sprite Midget Race Series) and we have some additional clarification where we use SCCA 1972 GCR and exceptions that VSCDA specify.  These are true Vintage Cars that fit in 2E or 2D.  If they deviate from that then they are in M1 or M2.  One of our problems is when Racers register, they can put whatever is their opinion of what they think they are.  I have attached our SMRS Rules and Regulations and is what we use to calculate point per class:

If you have any other questions please let me know.
