I have been racing my 1275 Midget on and off for about 26 years (kinda "off" for the last few). I built it following the 1968 MG/British Leyland factory Competition Manual for European endurance racing. It's all steel, with a factory hard top, windshield and legal road equipment. Which means it's HEAVY! In 1997 I raced in Spec Sprite, a great idea that never really took off. With VSCDA, SVRA, VRG and VARAC I used to run pretty much mid-pack. As the years have progressed (and perhaps drivers have gotten more financially successful (?), even all-steel vintage Spridgets have expensive, highly prepared motors and are *fast*. It's still fun and, in the right run group, there's always the slow MGA and the strong 948 Bugeye to dice with. In VSCDA, we don't award trophies, which is a good thing. (What would Soave do with all those trophies! ;-))) As for checking the integrity of the preparation, my car was only carefully examined once, and that was to qualify for the Era Correct designation. Tech looks at safety items but not at one's honesty. Not a problem since vintage racing has always been an "honorable sport" unlike most omotor racing. Post-1972 "obsolete" SCCA cars? Create additional classes, or let them run "exhibition." The prize money is the same. Stan has done a wonderful job of encouraging Spridget racers to come out and play. I think the VSCDA is in a good position to encourage more H Prod cars to come play as the scca has allowed fuel injected cars into HP to the determinant of Spridgets. I remember hearing the immortal words of Jim Donato re the Road America Spridget Celebration: ??it?s a big track, there?s room for all?? Have fun out there! As you know we have a strong SCCA HP class, which is 2E VSCDA.? We have 6 that race in our group.? I am going and I know several others 2Es that are going.? This event is gaining a lot of National interest and I expect more 948s. In regard to other more modified cars, Jeff Porada is right.? We try to accommodate most cars and if they meet VSCDA and 2972 GCR Requirements they will be in the more Vintage Classes of 2E Bug Eyes for 948 and 2D Square Bodies for 1275? I have listed our Rules and Regulations for Sprite Midget Race Series below: 2024 VSCDA SpriteMidget Race Series Rules and Regulations (Revision 6/23/24) I. Objective: Increase numbers for Racing Spridgets @ VSCDAEvents by having: A. More cars, which, will allowmore wheel to wheel racing safely within Spridget Classes (with classes forvarious levels of preparation). B. Continued tradition establishedby Thickos through camaraderie and group get together (cook out lunch Saturdayand Sunday, British Pub Saturday evening when a 3 day race weekend along withtechnical and moral support through group). C. Series Points developed fromEarlier Vintage Vee model. Including durability (laps completed) from 1stSprint Race, Fastest time from 1st Qualification Race and Position for SpridgetRace in a best 2 out of 3 race weekends identified in series. D. To embrace vintage sports carracing philosophy and etiquette of VSCDA?s Driver Policy with an emphasis onSafety. E. Encourage street Austin Healeys& MGs as spectators by offering special parking near our Spridget Compoundinviting them to join in the fun and encourage track touring session andassisting as crew. Note: Revisions to this document will be highlighted in yellow sochanges from previous documents can be seen more easily. Date of revision willbe listed at top of document.? II. VSCDA Sprite Midget Point Races 2024: A. Gingerman May 4 & 5 ? (May 2&3 DriverSchool)? B. Blackhawk Classic June 14-16 C. Grattan Grand Finale August 9-11 III. Racing Classes per VSCDA / SCCA (1972 Classifications Guidelinesfor Points and Awards) Revamp with 1972 GCR / PCS Focus. Our intent isto have anyone interested in racing a Vintage Spridget to join us. This is adouble edge sword since an individual may have their own personal opinion ofwhy they think they should or should not be in a certain class. Vintage Racinghas many clubs throughout the US and Canada with different criteria than ours.We have 3 levels within 3 classes that should allow anyone interested in racingto have a place to compete with other similar prepared racing Spridgets. Werecognize that everyone has an opinion of what is fair, based on their logic. We have tried to make that more defined by 1972 SCCA GCR Specificationsdetailed, which is a VSCDA requirement. We would like to encourage placing theproper designation on your car & when you register. IV. SMRS 1972 SCCA GCR / PCS Highlight of Requirements. A. Background: VSCDA definesRegulations for Group 2 cars like our Sprites and Midgets from the VSCDAWebsite and updated 3/28/22 titled TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR RACE CARS: B. VSCDA - SCCA 1967 General CompetitionRules Appendix A/Article. Production Category Sports Cars (w/PCS sheets) andafter review, 1972 and prior cars homologated to similar regulations publishedby FIA and some other sanctioning bodies. C. Objective: Now that we have acopy of SCCA?s 1972 GCR /PCS rev 1/73 we actually have facts on what wasrequired then vs what we heard or thought it might be. This document isavailable to anyone that would like an electronic copy. The goal for thisdocument is to highlight requirements as of 1972 GCR that would impact SquareBody Sprites and Midgets on common areas of misunderstanding. For the sake ofcommonality and consensus within our group Mk1 Bug Eyes will also follow 1972GCR requirements, which is consistent with VSCDA requirements. You don't want any stray fuel vapors anywhere near an area where you will be creating a spark. Note; More than once, I have witnessed an A-series distributor that has dislodged itself from the hole in the engine block due to a distributor clamp that was not tightened properly. Checking to make sure the distributor is held securely in the clamp would be well advised before you check for other electrical problems. Another important note; Before you check electrical connections under the bonnet of your car, MAKE CERTAIN YOU HAVE NO FUEL LEAKS. To check for spark. First check for spark at the points. Remove the distributor cap and watch the points while you turn the engine over with the starter. Make certain the ignition is switched on if you have a separate switch for the ignition on your car. If you can not see the points while you are turning the engine over with the starter (you are by yourself and have no one to help you), switch on the ignition and flick the points with a small screwdriver (or your finger) to see if you get a spark when the points are separated. If you have no spark at the points, check for loose wires to the coil and/or distributor. The problem may be in the electrical wiring at your ignition switch. You can hot-wire the coil with a short piece of wire. (I carry a jump wire with alligator clips on each end). On a negative ground car, connect the jump wire to the positive side of the coil and to the positive post on the battery and check for spark at the points again. If you still have no spark at the points, the problem may either be the condenser or the coil. If you have spark at the points, - next check for spark at one of the spark plugs. The easiest way to do this is to remove one of the spark plugs and with the ignition wire for that spark plug wire attached to the plug, hold the spark plug in contact with the engine and turn the engine with the starter. You should see a spark at the gap in the spark plug. If you have spark at the points but no spark at the plug you may have a faulty distributor cap or rotor. If you have a spark at the spark plug, it's time to check for fuel supply. Put the distributor cap back on and re-install the spark plug. You don't want any stray sparks while you are checking for fuel supply. To check for fuel delivery. Disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor and activate the fuel pump. (On cars with electric pumps, turning on the ignition will accomplish this. On cars with mechanical fuel pumps you will need to turn the engine with the starter). If you have no fuel being delivered at the fuel line you disconnected from the carb, you may either be; out of fuel, your fuel pump stopped working, or you have a blockage in the tank or at the fuel filter. Another possibility is a broken fuel line between the tank and the engine. Kevin V. The Nasty Boy needed a new engine harness after the fire and trying to remember what I did almost 15 years ago to hook everything up with some additional items like MSD box, GPS speedometer box, high-intensity headlights with relays, three-way dipswitch on the dash, alternator conversion, stereo radio with amp is taxing my aging brain.
