Keeps the timing spot on. It occurs to me that like other cars the timing belt has a limited life and must be changed. To be honest the instructions did not say when this should occur as far as I can remember. To be fair, the rebuilt engine has only a little over 3K miles on it, but the question arises about valve interference if the belt breaks. To my knowledge, I don't think so, but I have been proven wrong before. Anyone know if a 1275 would be an interference engine if the belt broke? In 2006 my wife was fondly reminiscing about the 64 MIdget I'd bought for her in 74 when we were first married. eBay to the rescue - we bought her a very clean, 14,000 mile 78 Midget. that had been won on Wheel of Fortune. One owner till it was sold to the kid who flipped it to us. Extremely rust free - actually lots of still-shiny threads on things I've taken apart. A treat to work on, other than the fact that I didn't realize till we bought it that Leyland had dropped the BMC engine and shoehorned a Spitfire engine into it. I wa always a TR guy - starting with a TR3 in1965. But it just doesn't fit in the car well. After I'd renewed hydraulics, brakes, fuel system, etc. she was excited for a while and drove it all summer, but after a few years she just didn't drive it much it came out less and less till in 2016 (I think) we just put it away. Now, after maybe 6 years in storage, we brought it home, thinking that with prices up we might recoup some of the giant pile of dollars I put into the car. So much of the suspension rubber that I put on in 2006-7 has now split and deteriorated. Back then there were choices in parts dealers (I haven't been a Moss fan since Al Moss sold out - used to be a great place to get real TC parts when that's all they sold). Now they seem to be the only game in town, and many of the bad new rubber came from them. Further, they don't even list some of it any more. Definitely appreciate the discount and the additional degree of separation form Moss. Looks like some of those companies only have Mini stuff, and this is one of the ones after Leyland left their hoofprints on BMC and put a Spitfire engine into the Midget. One of those details I missed in my enthusiasm to buy her this car. Probably a decent engine but it just doesn?t fit like the A-Series did. And the emission controls, which I have maintained but they make it even more crammed and less easy to adjust. Since I have to replace chassis rubber, I?m interested in polyurethane. However, I?ve been mostly maintaining my everyday cars for many years now and haven?t had much time for my LBC?s. In looking at replacing suspension bushings on , say, my 99 Cobra, I frequently hear complaints about Poly bushings squeaking, if not immediately then later, even if you use the magic silicone goo from Prothane, etc. Is that typical for Spridgets too? We intend to sell this car as it?s extremely rust-free and original. Not likely to become a race car, and I presume a future owner will want it to ride as new as it looks. The car has always felt floaty on the road as if the shocks were too soft. Figured it was the Armstrongs but now that I?ve taken them off to send to Peter Caldwell they don?t seem at all bad. Tires are nearly new Vredesteins, as close to the stock XZX?s as I could find. Nothing?s notably worn in the front suspension, shock links, sway bar links and mounts, etc, but as long as I?m in there I?m removing, blasting, and repainting the springs, spring seats, and A-arms because they have some rust along with lots of factory paint. I will of courses rebush whatever I remove. Advice on poly vs rubber bushings, brands, secret sauce to lube things, etc etc? Mark Haynes flew into town on Friday afternoon, and after picking him up and heading back to my house, we got started. We got a lay of the land of the two Sprites and came up with the gameplan on how to tackle things. Both Sprites had been sitting for quite a while, with my Sprite always garaged, and my Dad's Sprite sitting outside in his backyard. We weren't too hopeful for the prospects of getting his running quickly, so we decided to make the main focus to get my engine running. I had planned to take my engine to the machine shop, then start ordering from Hap, but when I contacted my machine shop last month they told me they have a three month backlog. Mark took a look at my engine, and confirmed that it actually looked ok, and I didn't damage my pistons or cylinder walls when I ingested a washer from the Weber downdraft air cleaner. We grabbed a mill bastard file and some scotch-brite, and he lightly filed the head down and cleaned up the pistons and cylinder walls. We also worked on removing the gas tank from my Dad's Sprite. Opened the drain plug, and just a trickle of fuel came out. Surprisingly, the nuts holding it on turned easily, and weren't rusted solid. We drop the tank, and it weighs a ton. It is full of varnish sludge, and was rusted through in a couple of places on top. On Saturday we woke up nice and early to get back to work. Right as we started, the AC guy showed up to install the coolant lines for a mini-split AC I put in a room right off my garage. Which was a godsend, because it got up to 101 that day, and by using a fan, it can spread that cold air into the garage. We then work to get the engine and transmission out of my Dad's Sprite. The SU carbs are seized, which to us didn't bode well to the rest of the engine. We pull off the valve cover, and to our surprise, it looked pristine! A light sheen of oil on everything, and looked perfectly normal. We drained the oil out of the transmission and engine, and it was all oil, no water. A very promising sign. We pull the plugs out of the head, and then try to turn the engine. We can do it by hand! After sitting outside since the late 1990s, it hadn't seized. After lunch, we are visited by a new Sprite owner from a nearby town Richard R., who bought a Sprite for his daughter. They are new to LBCs, and we spent a few hours visiting and answering questions they had on various things about their new purchase. He had a strange issue with the wipers where they would jump up to vertical, then only wipe about 20 degrees side to side, and would have to be moved manually back to the down position when turned off. But if you had newspaper under the wiper blades, it operated as expected. Mark and I took a look, and nothing was jumping out to us. Mark and I proceeded to get back to the Sprites, and find that I had done some screwups when I installed the Rivergate 5 Speed back in 2000. I didn't remove the facing piece off of the clutch pressure plate, and it had sheared some retaining rings for it off, and knocked the pilot bushing out as well and broke it into several pieces. We found the piece of the pressure plate in front of the throw out bearing. So I had to order both of those parts so we can get things put back together. On Sunday we started bright and early, and got both Sprites out of the garage. They both are on wheel dollies, which makes it much easier to move them around. I also have a guest in the garage, a Harley Dyna-glide which is owned by my boss. It has a bigger engine than the Sprites, and probably weighs more as well. My Sprite had become a bit of extra storage space in the garage, so I cleaned everything out and removed the old interior. Then I pulled out lots of boxes of stuff I ordered from Vicky Brit back in 2000 when I was planning to redo the Sprite. I had a full interior kit which was still in perfect condition. While I was doing that, Mark worked on doing a three card monty with trunk handles and locks. My Dad's trunk lid was shot, and I had a new lid for mine, so Mark worked on the removal and reinstall of the handles. Around lunch time, my parents arrived from Fort Worth, so after introductions to Mark, we walked my Dad through what we'd done to his Sprite. We are going to do the Creative Spridgets serpentine belt conversion on both of them, so after lunch we started on the process of removing the crankshaft pulley. After tracking down a 1 5/16th socket, we pulled out the impact wrench. The one on my Dad's engine didn't budge. This was the first connector that we've had an issue trying to remove. Mine spun off easily. We then proceed to remove the timing cover and sump pan on mine. There was a lot of slop in my timing chain, so ordered a new set to install this week. We've ordered the reinforcement plates from British Car Fixes for the timing cover and sump pan coming to install as well. That's the wrap up for the first weekend. Mark is staying through the week, as is my Dad. Jack Orkin and his wife are driving in from Atlanta tomorrow evening, and will be here until Friday morning. So we'll have an extra set of hands to tackle engine reassembly once the parts arrive on Tuesday/Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing what we can get done this week! The goal is to get mine to fire by Memorial Day. For being outside so long, my Dad's is in surprisingly good mechanical shape. There is a lot of surface rust, but the engine/transmission seem to be completely solid. I have the APT version of the 286 Scatter pattern and I really see the need to use more than 6000 rpm (except in 5th on a 3.9 diff with 70 profile tyres - you do the math!) and the engine has standard retainers on 1.5 Rockers. I forget why I was told not to bother with Ti retainers but since it was David Anton who told me I took his advice. I had to work during the day, so wasn't available as much as I liked Monday to Wednesday. On Monday, my Dad proceeded to finish the removal of the interior on his car. He had a couple of stubborn bolts for the seat rails, both with the bolt in the captive nuts, as well as the two through nuts. He was able to grind the heads down and got them out. While this was going on Mark worked on prepping the engines for the installation of the parts we ordered. Once I was done with work I joined in for a couple of hours of work that evening. After much PB Blaster and continuous application of the impact wrench and gentle persuasion from a BFH, the crank pulley finally came off of my Dad's engine. Tuesday ended up being more of the same, doing prep work in anticipation of the parts arriving. I painted my gas tank with truck bed liner, and we got it installed along with the ancillary bits. I was missing a couple of items, so I borrowed (stole) them from the cache of parts my Dad had previously ordered for his Sprite. That evening, Jack and Kathy Orkin arrived from Atlanta, and swung by to see what kind of progress we'd made, and what to expect over the next three days. On Wednesday, we anticipated the arrival of the parts. I had 7 boxes of stuff arriving from three different carriers. Usually UPS and FedEx arrive mid-morning, but today I was at the end of the delivery line. Most of the stuff arrived around 3pm. Once the parts arrived, there was a flurry of activity. Mark started on getting the Vernier timing gear set installed on my engine. We discovered that the coolant bypass on the bottom of the Pierce aluminum head was tapped differently than the bypass on the cast iron head. Got a hold of Pierce, and it was tapped 1/4 NPT, so just had to find the right fitting at a home improvement or auto parts store. On Thursday, there was more work getting the parts installed. Mark and Jack worked on my engine, getting the head re-installed, the new serpentine pulley put on the crank, the timing gear and sump gaskets in place. I took off work in the early afternoon, and started on the pieces for the VW Rabbit radiator conversion. I got the radiator in the general spot, and started to plan out where mounts needed to be fabricated to get it into place. My Dad worked on fabricating the mounts for the tensioners out of 1 x 1.5 aluminum bar. That was slow going with the tool we had, and the thickness of the material. After a long day of work, we ate as a group at The Salt Lick BBQ restaurant in Driftwood. Waking up on Friday, our goal was to get my engine in place and to get it to fire by the end of the day.. We got the Datsun 5 speed mated to the rear of the engine, then spent quite a bit of time getting the serpentine pulleys to align. The alternator ended up being the difficult child, and we spent a couple of hours grinding and filing surfaces, finally getting it to line up. Got the serpentine belt installed, then got the drive train back into the car. After we got the drivetrain back in, I then started working on plumbing the new radiator. My setup was just enough different from the examples on Creative Spridgets that I had to deviate quite a bit. But we got it in place. Mark double checked the torque on the head bolts, and we then proceeded to get oil into the transmission and engine. Unfortunately we discovered that the fuel pump would not come back to life, so we used a "Jack Tank", which was Jack Orkin holding a bottle with fuel and squeezing it to deliver fuel to the carb. Here was what happened: https://wx.greggowins.com/weewx/videos/index.html The first time the engine had fired since end of 2000/beginning of 2001! Didn't have to do anything to the Weber carb even after it was sitting all that time. We then had a celebratory beer, followed by another group dinner at the Hays City Store (try the onion rings). After dinner we said our goodbyes to Jack and Kathy, who were heading back to Georgia the next morning. On Saturday, the plan was to do the work to dial in the engine and get the radiator fully working. Here is where Lord Lucas reared his head. There is some kind of demon that possesses the timing of my engine. We got the pulley mark to TDC, and then pulled the valve cover to confirm that yes, the engine was at TDC. The engine would not fire at all. We move the distributor around, and get it back to a spot where the engine would start and run. Get the timing light down there, and the mark was nearly 90 degrees off of where it should have been. Rock the mark back to TDC, pull the valve cover, checked the valve position, and verified we had the plug wires connected as expected. The engine would only run at the bizarre marking. Not sure if anyone else has experienced anything like this, all we could figure is that there was something really strange going on with the dog on the distributor. So from that point we fine tuned the timing and got the carbs dialed in. The engine will fire on the first crank, and instantly responds to throttle input. That evening, we took Mark to his first pro rugby match, and the hometown Austin team beat San Diego. Sunday morning we took Mark to the airport for his flight home, then we headed to a pick-a-part to find some stuff for my Dad's Sprite. He wants to put Miata seats in his, as well as the Creative Spridgets rear disc brake conversion. We completely struck out. None the Miatas had seats, and all of the Sentras had rear drums. I poked around to see if there was a SLK with an Eaton Supercharger, but none of those were to be found either. Thanks to Mark and Jack for coming out to help get these projects going, after both cars have been sitting so long. I'm planning to get mine reassembled and inspected within the next couple of weeks. It will be ugly, but able to be on the road. My Dad is planning to spend quite a bit of time here in July getting body work done on his, and treating the rust that we've found. We've buttoned his engine back up, and it will be ready to reinstall when we get to that point. It was an eventful 10 days! Always great to spend time with fellow Spridget folks and work on these cars. There were many mentions of Frank during the time we were working on these, and I have one of the stickers to put on the glass once the project is finished. Congrats on the progress! As for the distributor, if it?s a Pertronix, there?s a good chance the dog drive isn?t quite right. I have seen 3 or 4, most recently Billy Zoom, who have had to put an old dog gear in. The dog is not the same geometry and the dizzy won?t quite seat right and will sort of ratchet and pop out. Bizarrely, there will be enough friction to wear it might start but not run. Here was what happened: > > https://wx.greggowins.com/weewx/videos/index.html > > The first time the engine had fired since end of 2000/beginning of 2001!
