If you have not registered yet do it soon.? I am awaiting additional information before I can forward our typical agenda with paddock location and festivities.? Additional details at :?https://www.visitpittsburgh.com/events-festivals/pittsburgh-vintage-grand-prix/ John Salisbury mentioned that there were several racers that are going to link this weekend with a SCCA Mid-Ohio Regional event (the weekend after Pitt GP) where there will be an exclusive H Production Race that Jason Stine has initiated as I understand.? This is open to Vintage Sprites and Midgets as well and a great opportunity to race SCCA.? As John explained they will except Vintage Driver School certification.? SCCA Roll bar specifications should be reviewed to make sure along with other safety requirements are met. It would be very difficult to cordon off a piece of real estate for a Spridget Village. Remember, it is not a race track. It's a 150 year old park designed for horses and buggies. As is my habit of late, I will not be joining you, but can say it is a unique and thrilling experience where small indiscretions invite major consequences (a bit like marriage). To all who go: you will NEVER forget the storm drains, granite curbs, stone walls, bad pavement and 150-foot ravine drop offs where other tracks would have a sand pit run-off. Enjoy! And hope to see you guys at Put-in-Bay. JohnD On Fri, Jul 15, 2022 at 12:25 PM Don Kelly wrote: > #9 is in the body shop. Work at the fab shop was delayed a week due to > covid. I am working to help Rick?s wife Vicky find a new home for his ?78 Midget. The car has been sitting for a couple years and will need a going through of at least the hydraulics and fuel system to get it back on the road but other wise should be a fairly solid car for someone. This is the same car that he and his son drive back to Elkhart lake back in 2011. As anyone who has worked on Rick?s car knows he had made several modifications to it including a bugeye bonnet, Datsun engine and transmission, Miata heated seats, and aluminum wheels. I have included a picture of it from the past on the road. I have current pictures but they are 4 to 5 MB so to large to send out unless requested. I will try to reduce them. Vicky's goal would be to find someone who would keep the car together and get it back on the road to enjoy as much as she and Rick did. Failing that we will investigate other options. If you or someone you know think this sounds interesting please let me know. We would like to have this moved on while the weather is dry so Vicky can take care of some things she needs to around the house. The car is located in Snoqualmie Wa, just east of Seattle. Andrew had everyone very well covered and won going away. Toby, who just started racing two or three years ago, has really got it figured out, now. Last year, the car was a lot faster than he was. This season, he?s really hooked-up! Andrew?s car has a nearly 58 year competition record, having been purchased new, from Massey Imports (Pittsburgh) by one of their line mechanics, Bob Hopper. Bob, who died of cancer a few years back, was a good friend of mine & my family?s and bought the car specifically for racing. So, it was an SCCA warrior from brand new. Bob was never able to spend a lot of money on his racing. But, he was a VERY capable driver and did pretty well with the car. He would have been so proud of Andrew and his old car! Andrew has done a terrific job of preparing and driving the car and it was heart-warming for me to watch him absolutely decimate the field, this past Sunday. One thing that has always bothered me since I built this 1275 was how slow the oil was to go down through the head to the pan. I have a raised valve cover for room for the 1.5 rockers. I can pour two quarts of oil in the filler neck and then I have to wait for it to go down. It fills up the entire valve cover and takes several minutes before I can pour the 3rd quart in. When I built the motor I used hollow pushrods of a larger diameter than the standard type, but I had the through holes in the head for the pushrods enlarged as required for these pushrods. Maybe the holes are not big enough in diameter. Would this be a problem in normal operation of returning the oil to the pan while running? I have put 3000 miles plus on this engine since the rebuild and it is still running great, but the oil pressure reads 90 psi on start up and goes down just below 80 psi when warm at speed. For some reason the engine runs fine and puts out plenty of power. It's just every time I do an oil change the slow drain into the engine makes me wonder. You need that drain back. Also, my engines rev. A lot. I consider 7000 rpm short shifting If you miss a shift or anything else goes wrong, the soft pushrods are an excellent mechanical fuse. The bend rather than valves and subsequently pistons survive. I rececentky have tried MED?s stock diameter pushrods, but made of harder stainless. That makes maximum horsepower at 8200 RPM And I was told you had a great reputation but I?ve come to realize it?s really a fraud that the stock pushrods for flex like rubber bands at that RPM. That?s absolutely not true. Inspection showed zero distortion. The stainless ones are fine but much less bargain as a fuse. There is no need for the larger diameter pushrods. Your mileage may vary - this is just my experience on some stinky fast race motors. The attached are the accumulated results to date after Pittsburgh Grand Prix.? This was a great turnout of Spridgets with some new racers.? We added this race to our SMRS schedule for a best 2 out of 4 race series for the first time.? I would like to Congratulate Mark Maehling for his vision of making this happen and setting up a Spridget Paddock that was not easy to do in a Park setting along with honoring a friend and local legend Donna Mae Mims.? I also appreciate the support that Dave Kessinger provided and the nice write up provided about SMRS.? I also understand that Manley Ford had some very positive things to say at the Donna Mae Mims award ceremony about SMRS. Grattan is turning out well with up to 35 Racing Spridgets expected (making it our second largest gathering of Spridgets ever!).? We have the same Spridget Paddock space we had last year with more cars, which is going to make it difficult to squeeze everyone in.? The paddock opens at 9AM.? I will do my best to be there when they open.?? Great turn out of 948 Bug Eyes in 2E with 6 planned.? We have our typical fun planned off and on the track with the GrattanSprite Midget Race Series Finale.? Thisyear?s awards will be navy blue baseball caps with SMRS logo on front and 1st,2nd & 3rd on back for the top 3 in each of our 8classes. You need to have raced in 2 of the 4 available races to qualify (Gman,Blackhawk, Pittsburgh & Grattan).? Our Group 2 (Vintage Production Sports Cars 1950-1963) willbe Group C for this race, which should get us off the track a little earlier in eachsession.? We can expect a similarexperience to last year with lots of track time (10 race sessions if youinclude Enduro and Spridget Series Race), as they say bring extra fuel!? We will have our traditional Saturday andSunday Sprite Midget Luncheons with our favorite Sports Car food group ?Brats? (Itis always appreciated if you can get pre cooked brats or boil prior to showingup so they can brown on the grill more quickly and reduce the amount of greasefires we have).? It is greatlyappreciated when others can assist with grilling responsibilities knowing someof us will be up to our elbows in grease (not pork, but petroleum) trying tomake the next session.? Side dishes arealways appreciated as well.? I willprovide condiments, hot grill, plates, napkins & plastic ware.? The reason I made the switch was that short of routinely pulling the rockers to pull the push rods I had no way of checking them for straightness. How did a road engine (Kent 286 cam at that time followed by the APT scatter of about the same lift and timing) bend standard push rods? Well lots of sustained road-going 7500 rpm (Sprite had a low diff for a long time) or that accidental blip to 8200 rpm (Could barely believe the tacho tell-tale). The current engine has a close ratio 5-speed and correct diff and tyre size to just about stay on the maximum power band 6 through to 6.5 and 120+ mph (Cda on request!) not to need push rod bending rpm. BUT are the stock push rods of today as good as the stock push rods of yesterday? As far as oil drain down goes, with a fairly basic baffled sump the only time I've seen oil surge to be an issue was coming to an absolute stop for a roundabout from anything over 70 mph from memory WHEN I had something like a 10-40 oil instead of 0-50, 15-50 etc. The 40 grade seemed thin enough to work fine except for the occasional hard stop when the oil pressure gauge would take that alarming fast swing downwards.
