Message-ID: Hi List, I've been working my way through the youtuber 'Towtrucker' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5yMAL6Vqag And I now understand the stuff that listers have said about residents associations and stuff in years gone by (a vintage junker is still a junker to them!). I hadn't appreciated that some Americans live on what I'd call working class private gated communities. We don't have anything like that in the UK that I can think of. What I'm less clear about is tags and titles. So the tag is what I'd call the number plate and each year you have to pay the government ('the man'?) for a sticker that says you are paying something like road tax on it or that it has passed annual inspection? Each state has its own tags and if you move your car permanently from one state to another you have to re-register it? You can pick your own numbers and letters? The title is some sort of certificate of ownership? Have I got that correct? Here in the UK you have a document of vehicle registration which has your name and address on it and the details of the vehicle, including the registration number it was given when purchased new. The only rules are that pre 1973 vehicles can have white letters on a black background front and year. Later cars have a kind of reflective white on the front with black letters and a kind of reflective yellow on the rear with black letters. You can't make up your own number but can buy an unused number from a dealer or the UK licensing body - a private plate / cherised number. People like a short number with their initials. In the 70s TV series 'The Persuaders' Brett Sinclair had the reg BS1 on his Aston-Martin DBS. But in really life that reg was only loaned to the TV company for filming as Billy Smart (of the circus) owned that number. Porsche UK once lent me a 911 Tiptronic press car (no story from that long weekend made it into my book of funny short stories or even truth presented as fiction in one of my fiction stories!) and it had the reg A 911. At that time (almost 30 years ago now) that registration number was not for sale but was estimated to be worth ?20K+ Some numbers at that time would sell for a lot more but many for a lot, lot less. All states have plates. They used to be dated for a single year and had to be replaced annually. Occasionally the plate design would change as well. Then they started making undated plates. Law enforcement would know if the plate was current by: a sticker on the plate (some states) or a sticker on the windscreen (called "Tags" and primarily used in the Eastern states, not used in the Western states) (the term "Tags" is sometimes used by Easterners to refer to plates. Not done in the West) Title is a paper that indicates car ownership. Some states do not use titles once a car reaches a certain age. I know Indiana as one case. You did not mention Registration, but all states require some form. It can be for just one or for multiple years. It is primarily a tax. States used to require that the registration be visible to law enforcement looking in the drivers window. Common methods were little plastic cases that were strapped to the steering column or to the sunscreen. The collapse of civilization ended that practice. Crooks would get the address off the registration then go burglarize your home... The simple tax disc is a much more elegant system. Safety and/or smog inspections are another whole different can of worms. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <475972149.20210905232619@comcast.net> Hello Weslake1330, Every state has different rules about "number plates" ... In the U.S. we call the license plates... They have stickers that expire yearly (in most cases.. I'll get to that). Those are called the tags. When you renew you get a new registration certificate. This is separate from the title (which proves ownership). .. Title goes with the car, and the new owner will get a new title when he registers the vehicle. At that time he will get new plates. .. Different states, different inspections or none at all. .. mostly none at all but some do have tests to make sure that they meet pollution requirements... others don't.. In most states you can pay more to get a plate of your own choosing, as long as someone else hasn't already claimed the one you want... .. These are called vanity plates. and usually restricted to 7 characters or fewer. There may be some that are the same but not from the same state... (I was thinking of getting one .... LCNSPL8... it's not taken in the state of Washington .. but I digress.. Also in some if not most states are "collector car plates) .. and "Horseless carriage" plates... these are one time cost plates. and do not have yearly tags... .. collector car plates are for cars older than 25 years and there are restrictions on the use of the car..-- to and from.. and in parades.. and limited pleasure and test purpose driving--. .. also for cars older than 25 years.. if you can find a plate with tags from the year the car was made, you can use that, again for a one time fee with limited use restrictions... When the police pull you over they want to see the registration. which proves the car is yours and the taxes have been paid for the year, but .. you keep the title safe at home. ..and that is what gets transferred when you sell the car or move to another state. .. kinda like the deed to a house... you sign away the title. A little misinformation in some of the answers so far. :-) In some states the license plate stays with the car for it's entire life, as long as the car stays in the state and is not sold and registered in another state. California is one state for example where the plate stays with the car for it's entire life. If a used car is sold the new owner gets a new title and registration in his name, but the same plate is used. In Michigan where I live now the plate stays with the driver and gets transferred from car to car. You can also get a new license plate here whenever you want. The plates in Michigan are replaced by the state after a certain number of years because they deteriorate in our weather. Many states have inspections for emissions control equipment. California is one such state, and while car guys hate smog devices they do work. I lived in California back in the sixties and I remember times when you could literally not see three blocks down the road because of the smog. We had regular smog alerts when the kids at school were not allowed to go outside because just breathing the air was the equivalent of smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. Michigan has no smog inspections. We just let our pollution blow over to Canada and New York. Safety inspections are left up to the individual states, some have them some don't. However, the states with very thorough safety inpections have the same accident rates as states with no inspections, so in my opinion they are really nothing but a money grab by the state. No one seems to be able to prove that the "safety" inspections do any good at all other than providing an income source for the state and the inspection station operators. One other thing no one has mentioned is that some states require a plate on the front and rear of the car while others (such as Michigan) only require a plate on the rear. The plate is mostly used to identify a vehicle trying to leave the scene of an incident. How often does someone back away from the scene of a crime? In some states, you can pass your number plate on to relatives or by will. When a low-digit plate owner dies or turns his plate back into the department of motor vehicles, some states will hold an auction or lottery so that people can try to get it https://www.fosters.com/article/20050816/news0103/108160014 Most states will allow you to purchase a "vanity" or "personalized" plate with letters or numbers you specify: Then the states need to hire workers to make sure people don't ask for "offensive" sayings on their plates: https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/622562/banned-personalized-license-plates Finally, most states will charge extra for plates that have certain backgrounds that appeal to people or support charitable causes. And to add another correction, titles are issued by the state, so titles and proof of ownership varies by state. New Hampshire (NH) used to not issue titles for vehicles over 15 years old. They changed that so that if the vehicle has a title, it is issued a new title on change of ownership, even if beyond the 15 year time frame. And that got unwieldy, so they made 1999 a cutoff date. https://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/title/index.htm I'm sure all of this information has clarified things for Weslake1330. :) One thing we can all agree on is that "tags and titles" vary by state. It is best to check the local state authorities for particulars. And even the "local state authorities" will vary by state. That "independence" thing runs deep. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... About 15 years ago I bought a top from Little British Car Company for my 60 Bugeye. They get their tops from a manufacturer in the UK. After installation the front top bow, when extended, did not fit in the "pocket" sewn in the top making the it loose and look deflated. See the pictures below. One picture shows the top looking deflated with the front bow fully extended. The other picture shows the front bow pulled back a little positioning it in the sewn fold (pocket). If the pocket is under tension, the front bow will pop our place when I hit a bump or pothole in the road. Then the top becomes loose and flaps in the wind. In the past when I canvassed this list the top bows extended measured out the same as everyone else's. I recently bought a Robbins top from Moss and could not fit it. No matter if it sat in the sun for a while to relax the vinyl or not, it was too small. I could not even get close to getting the front bar under the windshield lip with the front bow folded back and the top bows retracted into themselves on both sides to relieve tension. The top was a full inch to inch and a half away from the top of the windshield. It leaves me wondering where to get a correct fitting top now. Where did you buy your last top? I'm almost done. Then I can rebuild my deep pink Sprite's carburetors now that I have the new kit from Joe Curto, highly recommended by Tom Colby of Speedwell Engineering. Then flush my new brake system I bought from Gerard https://www.gerardsgarage.com, who is one of the best rebuilders. I've had air in the system for 2 years and now I'll try the bicycle pump trick thanks to Alan Fisher who sent me a couple of master cylinder caps and sells outstanding original Spridget parts! Thanks for paying it forward Alan. I'll need to remember to pick up that bicycle tube valve so I can install it on my cap and hopefully get that last bit of air out before winter sets in. Once school started in September every project was pushed back. We all should read old posts from our dear friend Frank Clarici to get motivated, and of course always pay it forward. The guy that had these tanks made said some had minor leaks and I should check for leaks. Thinking about rigging up something to pressure test it with compressed air instead of filling it with water as he suggested. The tank inside is pretty rust free, except where they welded the bungs for drain plug and filler plug and also the baffles, seems the welding area is what rusted on the inside.? Outside is just surface rust all over. ?I have used Hirsch tank sealer in the past with more or less success, but I see POR and Eastwood and many others are out there now.? Those would also seal any pinholes according to them. ?Any recommendations ? I am not against sending it out and having it done but I think being brand new and rust being minor, I should be able to do this myself.? The tank is fully exposed when in the car so its not something I can send out where they coat the inside and outside of the tank, only the inside can be done because the outside is painted car color and fully visible.? That is the only reason I am considering sending it out to have it cleaned of rust and coated inside, I don't want to use the wrong product, have to fix it and have to repaint it in a few years. ??? mike -- A gun is like a parachute, if you need one but don't have it, you'll probably never need one again.
