Message-ID: Hi guys, Vapor Lock I was out for a ride yesterday in my 1966 Sprite to view damage caused by the failure of two dams in my community. This meant driving through subdivisions at low speed. Also, I stopped for about 10 minutes (engine off) to talk to an acquaintance about damage to his home. I had a little trouble restarting the car, but it did start. On the way home I stalled the engine at a stop light on a 4 lane artery (with center turn lane) and it wouldn't restart. Fortunately, traffic was light and I had an opportunity to push the car into the service drive of a strip mall. There happened to be a tree/shade at the entrance so I stopped there and opened the hood and waited for the car to cool. (I suspected vapor lock.) The (new) fuel pump (Airtex E88016E) wasn't "tick - ticking", but I attributed that to the plunger not being able to trigger the electronics because of the fuel lock. I reminded myself that banging on the pump wouldn't work because there are no mechanical points in this pump. The air temp was near 90 deg. and I was parked on an asphalt lot - it was hot! I found my way home with the help of a good Samaritan. (I'm one of the last people in the world not to own a cell phone) Several hours later I went back with my wife - the Sprite still wouldn't start. I called a flatbed tow truck ($70 - about a 3 mile haul ) and got the car home. At home I turned the key and heard the familiar tick, tick. Shortly thereafter, I tried starting the car. After a few tries things got cleared out and it started. Troubleshooting The fuel in the tank is from last Fall (could have been a Winter blend) Shell V-Power NiTRO+ Premium. Probably too volatile for this heat. A fill up with Summer blend should help greatly. This is my #1 suspect for the cause of the problem. I suspect that the vapor lock occurred either: 1) in the fuel bowls, 2) or in the fuel filter (WIX 33031, metal can type), 3) or in the fuel line connecting the carbs (low chance) 4) or some combination of these. The fuel pump is in a "cool" (factory) location so not a suspect. Fuel lines from the tank to carbs are in factory locations - away from the exhaust pipe. The fuel filter is about the size of the float bowl on the SU carbs. I'm wondering if the size is too large thus allowing heat soak while the fuel spends too much time in the filter? What do you think? I should have walked to the grocery store in the strip mall and bought a gallon of water to try and cool the float bowls and fuel filter. Anyone had any success doing this? Your thoughts?? ps: Someone stopped and said I needed a clothes pin on the fuel line. Evidently some people believe in that as a fix. I can't imagine any science behind doing that. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... (I suspected vapor lock.)The (new) fuel pump (Airtex E88016E) wasn't "tick - ticking", but I attributed that to the plunger not being able to trigger the electronics because of the fuel lock. TroubleshootingThe fuel in the tank is from last Fall (could have been a Winter blend) Shell V-Power NiTRO+ Premium. Probably too volatile for this heat. A fill up with Summer blend should help greatly. This is my #1 suspect for the cause of the problem.I suspect that the vapor lock occurred either: 1) in the fuel bowls, 2) or in the fuel filter (WIX 33031, metal can type), 3) or in the fuel line connecting the carbs (low chance) 4) or some combination of these. What do you think?I should have walked to the grocery store in the strip mall and bought a gallon of water to try and cool the float bowls and fuel filter. Anyone had any success doing this?Your thoughts??ps: Someone stopped and said I needed a clothes pin on the fuel line. Evidently some people believe in that as a fix. I can't imagine any science behind doing that. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My old tow vehicle was 79 Chevy van the "L.B.1" ( Lust Bus 1). For what ever reason the mechanical fuel pump failed a number of times at the most inconvenient time! To fix this I installed an AC Marine type tick-tick pump inline. What I experienced with this set up was while towing the race trailer in the Florida keys the electric pump overheated! The electromagnetic coil got so hot , it did not properly do it's tick-tick with the gusto the designers intended. The pump was getting hot. No not excessive resistance , ambient temperature combined with the pumps "working " temperature. Replacing the pump with a new one proved that. > What I am suspecting is your pump got hot and decided electrically to stop pumping. In a vapor lock state an e lectric pump should stay pumping against a vapor lock yielding the pump sounding like the pump after it starts up and then builds pressure and the pump starts running against the built up pressure. Although I have never experienced this on my Mini, I have on the Moke and the Bugeye, I have noticed it when crawling along in stop & go traffic or similar type conditions. The cars continue to run fine but, it sounds as if I am running out of fuel, and it always causes me to immediately check the fuel gauge. ?All of my cars run an electronic pump in the original factory locations. I have one fuel filter between the tank and the pump and another one up front before the carbs. So, the question: if this is truly vapor lock, what do we do to eliminate it? Howard So what we we experiencing here is the pump pump pushing against a vapor lock situation? In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: This week will be another with temps in the mid 90's or above. I plan to drive the Sprite around (and around and around) the subdivision until it is nice and toasty warm. Then I'll stop at home, wait 10 minutes, and then try to restart the car. My expectation is that it won't start. Then I'll start putting cool rags on the fuel filter, carbs, and pump to see if I can bring the car back to life by cooling these components. I'm thinking I won't be able to isolate a single offending component - exactly where the fuel is turning to vapor, but that would be a nice find. If for some reason the car quits mid route, the walk home will be short and I'll save a $70 tow. The pump is new. I probably haven't run 5 tanks of fuel through it. Stay tuned. . . . All but 1 were aquired because I was told it runs but does not pump fuel " some times"!? ?And indeed that 1 pump has something wrong with it.? ? ?And based upon the external conditions I am led to believe they are near new.? Not corroded , rusty or any discoloration.? The other pumps are in my cars working flawlessly.? All that said , do not ignore the possibility of the pump , a bad ground or a intermittent conductivity problem in power to the pump as the culprit. In grounding I have gone to using a star washer between a ground wire terminal and the car body or frame to insure a positive metal to metal ground instead of relying upon the grounding bolt or screw threads.? ? Also I have tried to not use crimp on connectors , instead , soldering them and heat shrink tubing to shield the bare part of the soldered terminal.? ?While some of this borders on annoying tedium , it circumvents some real head scratching diagnostics down the road.ChuckAfter owning the same bugeye since 1974 , I have made a LOT of mistakes that have taught me over & over to just do it right...Sent from my LG Mobile -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Last night with my son in the driver's seat turning the ignition key for me, I threw some gas down the throat of the carb.? The car started immediately and then died when it ran out of fuel.? I took the carb off to disassemble it.? The viton tipped needle and seat shut off stuck in the seat bore with dried residue from ethanol.? Damn another great guy gone to fettle with our cars that have also gone their way. I, for one, would like further details if you know any you can contact me off list. We first met Bob in Green Bay WI where my son was at UWGB and he was camping, of course, and had his prized Nevada Beige Sprite with the dished grill he swore was original. It became a running joke like the rear bumpers on the Bugeye..."Aren't they upside down?" They stayed at our house a couple of times and I had the joy of getting to know this knowledgeable, unselfish, "give you the shirt off his back" man. The last time I got to work with Bob was at Jim Johnson's Wild West OSHIT gathering where he spent hours meticulously sizing and polishing a rear oil seal kit that Mark Haynes was installing on Jim's engine. Afterwards a great time was had having a brew and pizza while waiting out a tornado, see picture (Bob's at the far end in a maroon shirt.) Terri and I send our sympathies to the family and the AHCSD. There is a void in our collective. All those knowledgeable folks need to record their knowledge so it is not lost. I raise a glass of California Red to Bob. Be safe, stay well, stay alive! Dave W. I backed it out of the garage and only got a hundred feet or so before it died and refused to start again. This morning at 8 AM I pulled the carb off again for a more thorough cleaning. All fuel passage ways were clear. There was no reason for the car to act fuel starved again. I reassembled the carb and put it back in. The car runs fine now, but I don't know why. Speaking of Ethanol fuel, I am going to start using Ethanol-free fuel for my LBC's. The good news is, the closest station listed on the Puregas web site is a Sunoco station about 20 minutes from my home. The bad news is, they only carry 110 octane racing fuel in Ethanol-free at $8/gallon. The next closest station is about 45 minutes away, but well worth the drive. I guess I'll be stocking up on some additional 6 gallon fuel jugs. https://www.pure-gas.org/ Howard Collins In a message dated 7/22/2020 2:37:17 PM Eastern Standard Time, rrengineer.mike at att.net writes: Tank was originally rebuilt by Renuzit which probably coated the interior with something, but that was over 20 years ago.? Release the pinch. Does it start to flow again? Your pump may be bypassing after it sees the first stoppage and may not be recovering back to normal pumping. After the jar fills you can try removing the hose at the tank end, reversing the pump, and back flushing it. You may possibly have a hose collapsing before the pump. Try a different pump. That drove me crazy until I dropped the tank , pulled the sending unit and looks into the tank ! > Mike somewhere you have a restriction keeping your fuel from freely flowing from the pickup in the tank to feed your pump. Possibly an internally collapsing rubber fuel line connecting pump to tank? This ethanol fuel has done some rather odd stuff to rubber components over time. > Just some thoughts which might point you in a direction of discovering what is wrong. > Chuck > > Sent from my LG Mobile > ------------------------ > > spridgets at autox.team.net > > Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html > Suggested annual donation: $12.75 > > Archive: http://www.team.net/pipermail/spridgets http://autox.team.net/archive > > Unsubscribe/Manage: http://autox.team.net/mailman/options/spridgets/derf247 at gmail.com > ------------------------ > > spridgets at autox.team.net > > Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html > Suggested annual donation: $12.75 > > Archive: http://www.team.net/pipermail/spridgets http://autox.team.net/archive > > Unsubscribe/Manage: http://autox.team.net/mailman/options/spridgets/weslake1330 at gmail.com > ------------------------ > > spridgets at autox.team.net > > Donate: http://www.team.net/donate.html > Suggested annual donation: $12.75 > > Archive: http://www.team.net/pipermail/spridgets http://autox.team.net/archive > > Unsubscribe/Manage: http://autox.team.net/mailman/options/spridgets/oldsaabguy at comcast.net -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
