Well I fixed and fabricated a bit or two. Then I went to test fit it and UH-OH...houston we have a problem!? ?It would not fit over the rear main cap on my core 1275 block.? It took a little homework to figure this pan was intended for a 948 or 1098 with small journals.? Ok I did all the other work I might as well make it fit a 1275.? I had 1 1275 stock oil pan and 5 948 ones!? ?Yup I cut up a perfectly good 1275 pan and grafted the piece in the rear that fit the 1275 rear main cap. .BTW, the fronts fitment is the same 948-1275.? ?So...yesterday I was running taps through every threaded hole in the block a spin on oil filter fitment came to mind....yeah, it is an interference fit!? ?As in the filter I have (& I have 4 or 5 more ! So I intend to use them!) Is just long enough the end up literally into the top edge of the extended sump.? Guess what I'm doing today?? ?YES!? Cutting that edge to allow about 1/2"-3/4" clearance around the filter and between 3/4"-1" bottom of filter to the oil pan.? That will allow the use of a tool to loosen ( if needed) and enough room to drop off the threaded piece in the factory spin on filter housing.? I have the print that Moss sells, but had never seen this one before and I think it's great. Photo below. What got me really excited though was the postage stamps the seller used on the box to send me the print. Nearly all of them are 5 cent stamps! 5 cent stamps were issued between Jan. 63 and Jan. 68., so the stamps are 50+ years old! The 948 will have some value over a 1275 to concours and vintage racing people who want the 948. Otherwise, more CCs is more power. If you can rebuild for little or no increase in price over the 948 then go with more power. To me a 1275 with a single HIF44 and a 5-speed conversion is the ultimate Spridget driver setup. Flatten the panels somewhere with stacks of books on them for a while some place safe first.? ?They will flatten out after ever so slightly dampening them before heaping the books on them.? ( same process for early Saab rear deck/parcel shelf)Once flat again the paint sticks can be strategically cut to fit and reinforce the rear side of the cardboard panels.? ?Cover the paint sticks with some clear plastic wrap and pile the books on again.? The thing I can not remember is were the galley plugs on the tappet side of the block also drilled and threaded for 1/4 pipe plugs too.? Funny thing is I tried looking around the internet and lots of references to doing the distributor side of the block and it seems like no one is paying any attention to the galley plugs on the tappet side of the block.? They are .047" thick and they have no STD, only 30, 40, and 60 over. The bearings are rod bearings that should fit any A-series engine. My 1275 engine has Hepolite pistons at .60 over. I can't remember if the rings came with them but I do recall that they are chrome-vanadium rings... Most of the '67 12CC engines came with a nitrided EN-40B crank rather than the later tuftrided cranks. There may also be a difference in the center web, can't remember for sure. A little bit of dremel work to smooth the hole (if present) has superstitiously worked for me. I have never had a thin-flange or open web block fail. I had a miracle race motor that never had any issues for 10.9 years with a web ot anything else until a rod bolt failed at 8200 rpm. Even that block is getting sleeves and re-used. As for the thin flanged blocks, I gave one to Jeff Porasik in 2004 and it has been in constant use since, currently in Virginia region. I sold a thin flange block to Jeff Kelly last year, which I would never do if I didn?t believe they are absolutely fine, especially for street use.
