Many years ago, I welded up a tool from some angle iron. I bolt it to the side of the block with 2 bolts. the other side of the tool engages 2 teeth of the ring gear. Then you can torque without problems. Regards from Alex Robertson, Nambour, Australia, 4560.

Greetings Do you guys have any tricks to stop the engine turning when you torque up say, camshaft retaining nut or flywheel bolts? Both of these call for a fair bit of torque, and the engine wants to turn over making it more difficult, especially if you're doing it solo.
If any of you have a trick for keeping the engine from turning , I'd like to learn of it.Can't remember what I did last time..probably had an assistant with a large screwdriver on the ring gear teeth or something.Cheers

Yes, a wedge in the ring gear teeth as you say. Sometimes even a block of wood in the starter hole will work. If the oil pan is off, a piece of wood jammed between crank counterweight and block is effective as well.

Take the pan off and put a piece of 2X4 between the crank and the block.
